If doctors describe somebody as being in critical condition, that should be interpreted as "they will die if we don't do something immediately, and still might die despite our best efforts." The phrase shows up more often than it ought to in media because it sounds very dramatic (though it doesn't actually show up anywhere in this article). --- This is my signature.
