What I mean is, how do you perceive it? We're talking about the generic accent that nearly everyone in Hollywood movies has. It's an accent spread pretty much everywhere in Canada and the US.

For example, I perceive most English accents as being very upscale and classy. Scottish accents are rough and crude. Australian accents are adventurous. Southern US accents sound low class. Rural/eastern Canadian accents sound unintelligent.

Obviously not a criticism of the people in those regions, just how those accents are perceived to me.

What perception is there of the generic North American accent?

My wife watches Say Yes to the Dress, and let's just say I don't think the accents I've heard on there are properly projecting the kind of image you might be hoping for.

This. Accent can change based on location. From general area, to different states, to even different cities in the same state...

I'll trust the British/Australian actors that have said there's a generic American accent.

If you cant guess what part of the country they're from, it's a generic accent.

Yes, the midwest accent (not to be confused with the Minnesota accent, that's closer to a Canadian accent) that is in every movie and tv show

The same is true in England, and yet the concept of an English accent still exists.

In some ways, every individual person has their own unique accent. But nobody cares enough about those plebs.
