He found some rope in the elevator in Allen Hall over the weekend and tied it into a noose University spokeswoman, Robin Kaler said students in the hall at the Urbana campus reported finding the noose and it quickly blew up on social media and a woman who says she was with Smith when he tied the noose reported it to authorities Smith was arrested and charged with a felony hate crime and misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges He said he only spent about 30 seconds thinking about his actions and even after looking at it on social media didn't think it was serious enough to turn himself in. His attorney, Audrey Thompson declined to ocmment on it and said her client is a sophomore with enough credits to graduate this year and a GPA of 3.79 He enrolled there in the fall of 2018 and majored in Math as the university said they don't condone acts of intolerance, bias or prejudice His bond was set at 5000 and is scheduled for another hearing in late October Did you thought this was a girl when you first saw the picture? 19 y/o Andrew Smith, a University of Illinois student who tied a NOOSE and left it in a residence hall elevator was charged with a hate crime What's the context? Was it a majority-black or all-black dorm? How exactly does this jump to hate crime? mrduckbear posted... His bond was set at 5000 and is scheduled for another hearing in late October That's a fucking ridiculous bond for something like this. The kid isn't a flight risk and the crime doesn't make him a danger. It should have been bail rather than a bond, although they could have released him on his own recognizance considering that violent offenders often get that courtesy. mrduckbear posted...

They have strings hanging from the ceiling at my old job for roofers to tie stuff to. When the home theyre working on gets moved, the string hangs down about five feet off the ground. Someone tied nooses into about four of them, which is an incredible feat because the area was completely open, so I dont know how nobody saw them doing it. The nooses just kind of swayed with the wind coming in the bay door. Safety didnt like it too much but nobody else seemed bothered by it.
Also, hes not a racist and thats not a hate crime. --- I'm right, as expected. ... Copied to Clipboard!

After Googling the story it seems like nooses being left around the school and direct threats to black employees are a recurring issue at that school.

What's the context? Was it a majority-black or all-black dorm? How exactly does this jump to hate crime? This one had me scratching my head for the better part of an hour. There's nothing in any of the articles about Allen Hall being a particularly black dorm, and reading up on Allen Hall specifically gave no indication that it has any particular connection to black people or even black history (such as Allen Hall being the site of a civil rights protest or something). The only thing I was able to turn up is that it seems to be connected (in fact or in perception) to a larger wave of racist/white supremacist behavior on campus that's been going on for a few years. --- This album is not available to the public. After Googling the story it seems like nooses being left around the school and direct threats to black employees are a recurring issue at that school. I haven't been any to find any references to that so far (literally the only reference involving a noose and University of Illinois right now is to this story), but if the incidents were getting a lot of publicity on campus, it would be on him to know that it was going to be linked to that stuff. Even then, that seems more like grounds for expulsion than arrest. Yellow posted... I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with America, but in this culture, decorative nooses in public places are generally synonymous with white nationalism. If you were familiar with America, you'd know that it has lot more history than just that. It's been one of the most common forms of suicide (keep in mind Robin Williams JUST used one to kill himself a few years ago), it's a staple in horror, it was used within the justice system as a form of execution so it pops up in a *lot* of westerns, etc. Unless you're constantly looking for racism (and often finding it where it doesn't exist), your first thought when you see a noose isn't going to be white nationalism. Even if you only associated it with lynchings, a LOT of white people got lynched. Lynchings in the US predate slavery in the US EvilMegas posted... If the area isn't flooded with black people it's obviously not a hate crime, duh. I know this is difficult to understand, but there's this thing called "context." For example, a fist pump can be a gesture of enthusiasm during a sporting event. However, if a guy is glaring at you after you cut him off and waving his fist, that's an expression of anger or even an implied threat. See, this context thing changes the meaning of certain things. --- Gamefaqs cannot handle my #BrokenBrilliance ... Copied to Clipboard!

Smith was arrested and charged with a felony hate crime and misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges Hate crime suggests that it was target at someone. Who was it targeted at?
