I'm in the mood to feel immersed, and I happen to own Skyrim for PS3.

I've played virtually nothing other than the Switch this generation, so I am pretty sure an "old" game like this will still impress me.

A few questions:

1. How much will it detract from my experience to not play any of the other Elder Scrolls games? Can they be played out of order if I wind up loving this universe?

2. How decent is the PS3 release relative to the remaster and the PC release? Is it bad to play on a home console in general?

3. What, if any, DLC is worth getting?

4. Does it really take 100+ hours to complete the main story?

Let me add that I do not care about mods. I just want to play the game.

After so many saves it literally is unplayable. I do not know if they ever fixed that though to be fair.

1. You dont need to have played any other Elder Scrolls games

3. Dawnguard and Dragonborn both add large quests and new items/abilities. Dragonborn also adds a large new area.

4. No. If you just do the main quest it will be more like 30-40 hours. 100 is with a lot of sidequests, wandering/exploring, and/or the 2 DLC quests.

You will miss out on some little winks and nods as well as some overarcing lore that is enjoyable to hardcore fans like myself, but I would actually argue that you will pick up everything necessary to know as you go.

2. How decent is the PS3 release relative to the remaster and the PC release? Is it bad to play on a home console in general?
I have a friend who has it on PS3 and PC and he swears to me that it's vastly inferior to the PC version.

3. What, if any, DLC is worth getting?
For sure Dragonborn. It's massive and yet also enjoyable. Dawnguard has a lot of vampire lore, something you don't get in the regular game at all. Also, there's a companion that's pretty popular in that one. Hearthfire is only really fun if you want a heavily customizable house and enjoy the resource allocation game. I don't, personally.

4. Does it really take 100+ hours to complete the main story?
15 hours I would argue if you stick just to the main story. 100 sounds right for all the guilds, the main story and the Daedric quests.

To be fair, he is a gaming snob. I would imagine his biggest complaint might be load times, but I don't have any further info on what makes it better or worse.

There was definitely a widespread problem with PS3 version where the larger a save file got the worse the game would run, and i have no idea if it was ever fixed.

Skyrim is on Switch if you didnt know

Laptop? I game on my laptop. Skyrim doesn't have very high specs.

I played Skyrim on my laptop a few years ago, never played an Elder Scrolls before it. It was really fun and immersive. Main quest isn't that long, but there's a lot to do in the world and I found myself sidetracked a lot (in a good way).

That said, the moment I began to install mods, holy shit it was way better. Night and day (that's probably a mod too). So many quality of life add-ons, so many immersive add-ons to enhance the experience. Graphical add-ons.

I never use mods for games but I'd strongly recommend it for just this one.

I've played it on Switch PC and PS3. I didn't really mind the console versions. The biggest benefit to PC (to me) is mods. Like you want to see the villagers naked after you kill them, right?

I've never beaten the game, just spent like 100-200 hours collecting stuff and putting it into drawers and messing around.

For real, is that actually the benefit of mods? I never understood this, probably because I'm not an obsessive nerd.

1. Just about none, or at least very little. There's some easter eggs and stuff tossed in, but the game takes place quite a long time after the events of Oblivion and in a different region. Honestly, even as someone who has played the other games I had to watch videos of people explaining lore to start making more of the connections.

2. XFD buying the ps3 version. I want to say, even if you say you don't care about the mods, they are what has kept the game somewhat relevant to this day. Skyrim is a game from 2011 so unless you are running on an exploded potato you might be able to squeeze it. I will say though, loading a lot of mods will require some more horsepower. But there are a lot of QoL, small bug fix patches, combat improvements, graphical updates (which you probably won't be able to use but you know) etc that help the game along. There are mods that add completely new quests (with full voice acting), new npcs, and so on. There are obviously nude/sexy mods. TBH one of the real reasons to use those is because the base character models look extremely ugly. The hair, face, teeth, etc in the game looked pretty bad even for 2011 and those are almost the first mods I look for to use. There are also dumb mods like changing all the dragons to Thomas the Tank Engine.

3. Personally, I'd just buy the legend collection or whatever the fuck it's called. If you already have the base game than I'd buy Dragonborn (which adds a lot of stuff), and Dawnguard is you like the game enough. IMO you get more cool stuff in Dragonborn and the places you go are more interesting, but Dawnguard will give you more chances to roleplay and introduces better characters. Hearthfire is like you can make a big house and stuff. For convenience, it's nice because you get to have all your stuff in one place, but it's not really needed.

4. No, you can beat the main story in like 20 hours or so. But there is a ton of other side quests and stuff you can do.

I found Skyrim to be perfectly playable on older consoles, but I had it on 360, and I guess it didn't have the save file issue the PS3 version had?

I was feeling the itch to play it again in a new way, so I got the PC version on sale. A friend helped me set up modding it, and it's truly amazing. I think I have a good 30 mods installed (it's been a year or two since I've played) and they range from game-changing (better UI's, new magic system) to silly and completely inconsequential, but still great (playing the Old Spice whistle whenever I level a stat up, Billy Madison yelling YOU BLEW IT whenever I break a lockpick), to everything in between (having a Tommy Wiseau companion to help me fight, the rat species are now all Pikachus and the fish are all Magikarp).

I found all the mods to be completely overwhelming and some of them didn't work properly and honestly worrying about which ones to use and which ones weren't running right completely took away from my enjoyment of the game. I was on PS4.

There are soooooooo many mods, I ended up spending more time modding than playing.

Id recommend a clean playthrough if youve never touched it before, tbh
