Long story short, I heard something offensive on the radio the other day that "mullets are back in for this fall."

Yes, a fucking MULLET is apparently "in style" for a season that hasn't started yet.

It's led me to thinking about these things: Who on earth decides this? And why are they deciding to suggest people do their hair in a way that other people are going to mock? And why do people follow that instead of expressing themselves as themselves?

...is this too deep?

You're right that the DJ didn't cite a source. Just said that, when plugging an 80s movie song (St. Elmo's Fire), it was the #1 thing that people hope never comes back, and yet "it's back." Possible lie. I've yet to see someone dumb enough to do their hair like that this month. Perhaps it's because I don't pay too much attention to guys' hair but I'll be sure to comment if I do.

idk

Nobody decides? People just kinda do it. And depending on where people's heads are at, and maybe the confidence with which its pulled off, people think "huh, that actually looks/seems pretty good" and they do it, and then it propagates from there

"Where people's heads are at" is influenced by media/current events - I guess there's been maybe a little more 80s-set stuff than usual recently, like Stranger Things, so more mullets, for example?

Of course there's another side of it, where people try to be "ahead" of the trend by reading the patterns and predicting stuff, and then declaring something "in" so they can appear to be like a tastemaker, or knowledgeable about the subject. And that ultimately becomes self-serving. Declare something "in" enough times and it might end up actually being "in".

This entire subject is one of the silliest things about culture to me. The answer appears to be that someone with enough status wears something ridiculous with sufficient confidence to influence others and it spreads to trend slaves from there.

Where it gets really funny to me is stuff like the recent fanny pack trend, where something that once would have you laughed out of any of these same social circles is suddenly the must-have item you'd look out of touch not to have.

This is exactly why I made this topic. It's inane that people are so insecure about themselves that they have to replicate what some famous person did, solely because that famous person did it and not because they think it would look good on them. It should be the latter. When you try something new, as people change over time, shouldn't it be something that holds true to who you are? And sometimes, that thing may be what's "in" only because that's what's for sale. People also forget that what looked good last year still looks good this year and what looked bad last year still looks bad this year.

But certain things, such as mullets, should never be a thing ever again because they always look bad. The same is true for fanny packs. Those are for tourist functionality only and hold no fashion value whatsoever.

It is indeed silly how people need to be told what's "in style" when... what really is "in style" is being true to yourself, so long as that thing doesn't look ridiculous.

Eh, I think being true to yourself can sometimes look ridiculous and that's ok. I am never going to shit talk someone because they have a mullet or wear a fanny pack. If that's what you want and you're comfortable in it, I say fucking rock that shit.
