I think it's dumb how people tell others to follow their dreams without teaching them how to handle it if it doesn't work out. You're just setting someone standards high and then not giving them the tools to deal with not reaching those standards. I think the latter is the much more important part cause 99% of people aren't gonna achieve their silly ass dreams lol. Especially when they overly encourage the dream at an early age and never give the kid a chance to find something they might like more when their brain is actually developed and have more logic

Be yourself isnt bad advice, its just grossly oversimplified and over-prescribed. Taking the time to learn some social cues, the vast majority of people could probably get by on it. >_>

I wonder how many social cues, romantic or otherwise, that I'm completely oblivious to since my parents fucking sucked at teaching or talking to us about socializing. It's a goddamn miracle I turned out the way I did but I'm still severely crippled in the romantic department.

In a vacuum it's not bad advice. But let's use me as an example. Anytime it comes to putting myself out there, I overthink to the point of either never doing it and hating myself (asking someone out) or I spend an excessive amount of time figuring out the right thing to say (taking charge). I have tried so many times to hype myself up but to do that requires thinking about it and by the time I get an opportunity, the cycle fucking continues. I literally cannot not think about something too much.

But see that's actually a problem. I'm like that too, but looking back on my life a lot of the time the best things that happened were when I wasn't worrying as much.

Sometimes when I think too much I just give off the impression of being less confident, and that simple change can make a big difference

No I feel ya. Im thirty and only in my late twenties did I finally begin to feel comfortable navigating social settings. And even then I take a very distant, hands off approach that leaves me with almost no friends or social life lmao.

But another reason Im skeptical of people who decry be yourself is that when I see them in the wild, theyre focusing on changing themselves when to the outside observer that isnt their issue at all.

This one guy I know is actually fairly popular. But he takes absolutely no initiative in pursuing anything he actually wants. So in cases like that be yourself is more of a reassurance that theyve already got the basics down, now just focus on this other stuff.

Same here, but every time I try to be proactive, take risks intentionally, I destroy myself envisioning all the ways it can go wrong. I don't understand why I'm like this, aside from this massive issue I'm pretty social. It didn't lead to anything but I was able to ask someone out way back in freshman year. What happened to me?

Unironically this.

Basically it's saying "If someone does something wrong, just ignore it."

Yeah you saw someone steal somerhing and you said nothing, but you turn around and get mad when you get robbed.

The exception to this is if the mafia or someone else you don't want to fuck with threatens you or your family because yeah obviously I'm shutting up with a metaphorical gun to my head.

dave_is_slick posted...
Wait, how is this bad advice? Too much of anything is bad.

I'm mostly coming from the standpoint of food, nutrition and being healthy. There are some things that you need every day, and some things that you would be better off not having at all. It is generally better to avoid the "bad things" despite the number of "good healthy things" you are doing, because all that good work can be negated easily with a few poor choices.

People that are trying to be healthy or lose weight will see better and faster results by consistently eliminating certain foods (anything with sugar, fruits, white flour, starches, or anything that is low fat) while eating other higher quality foods rich in phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, omega-3s and essential amino acids (pasture raised eggs, grass fed beef, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, nuts and seeds).

Example, if your goal is to lose weight and build some muscle, you typically go on a diet with a calorie deficit and hit the gym, where you burn some calories and fat while building some muscle. After a workout, your body is in a particular state that is vulnerable to an insulin spike from food, and you decide to get fast food as a reward, which has a high amount of calories and low quality ingredients with poor nutrition. Those excess carbs and low quality proteins and fats will not be enough to be used to rebuild the body. Most of it will be burned as energy or stored away as fat, and you probably will go over your calorie requirements because you'll be hungry again in a couple hours. You obviously want to go for something healthier, so you should choose a protein shake, or some meat and veggies.

Fat is not bad, the brain and nervous system are made up of fat, and certain vitamins and minerals can only be solubilized with fat. Cholesterol is not bad, the body makes large amounts every day in order to create enzymes and hormones to get the body to do certain things, and cholesterol only acts as a bandaid in the arteries, chronic levels of insulin and high blood sugars are what trigger the plaque in the blood vessels and arteries. Salt is not bad, the body requires salt as an essential electrolyte to maintain body fluids and carry electrical signals through the cells and nervous system. People don't get enough potassium to balance out the sodium, the FDA recommends 1000mg of potassium to 2500mg of salt in the standard diet, but the numbers should be reversed... you need at least twice as much potassium than sodium every single day to have your body function normally. The deficiencies are signaled with weakness and fatigue, headaches, migraines, trouble sleeping, muscle cramps, and so much more.

It's okay to treat yourself to some fast food, snacks or sweets every once in a while, but that is not the same as "moderation". Moderation means to avoid excess or extremes, and the USDA recommending a diet of eating 300g of carbs every single day? That is not moderate or balanced, that is a heavy glycemic burden that will cause a systematic cascade of health problems.

I still disagree

I dont want help from others at work. I find them to slow me down. Should I not help others? I do help them. I like to be busy

I dont like to celebrate birthdays and holidays. Dont get me anything, please! Should I not gift people things?

This isnt me, but take this for example. I want someone to treat me as a sex object. A fuck toy. Should they treat others that way?
