The undead were tired of being ignore, so burned down the tree with the night elf starting area. The Horde and Alliance decided that peace was boring, and started to fight each other again. The Horde invaded more of the Night Elf starting areas.

uh like the whole expac so far?

slyvanas was like grr im evil lets burn down a tree. alliance and horde back at war, but then decided nah lets go set sail and explore some islands

blood trolls tried to summon a fake old god. they failed.
alliance decides to kidnap a dude LITERALLY FORESHADOWED IN VANILLA BUT THEN JUST KILL HIM INSTEAD (king rastakhan). oops. what a waste of a character.

then surprise! its azshara and nazjatar. she summons an old god. oops!

meanwhile:
horde resurrect jaina's brother so he can kill her, but that gets stopped by the player, baine, and thrall. and saurfang. they're like "its MoP 2.0 boys! lets go kill slyvanas!"

and today she pretty much says the horde sucks and fucks off to who knows what.

I've only really played Horde side, but let's be honest, that's all that matters in this expansion. You probably already know about Sylvanas burning down Teldrassil because she got mad when a night elf shit-talked her. And about the Alliance retaliating by attacking Undercity in which they captured Saurfang and Sylvanas went nuh-uh and plague bombed the place.

There was some stuff with G'hunn who is basically what happened when the Titans kept all of the garbage parts of Old God in a big pot. It turned into a big evil slug which was gonna wipe out all life on Azeroth, so we killed it. While fighting off G'huun's followers, King Rastakhan made a deal with Bwomsamdi where he agreed that he and all of his descendants would serve the Loa in life and in death forever. That might be important later, but it isn't really so far.

The Alliance attack Dazar'alor and sort of win by which I mean they kill King Rastakhan. But hey, it turns out killing their king just meant that the Zandalari are now super on board with the Horde, so good job, Jaina. By virtue of Rastakhan being dead, Talanji is now queen and also now has to serve Bwomsamdi. Again, maybe that'll be important later.

The player finds Xala'tath, Blade of the Black Empire - the old shadow priest artifact weapon - being used by some naga. Because the PC is an idiot, you decide to trust knaifu and accept her help to stop a naga ritual. Except, oops, the Old God knife offers the ritual components and the PC to N'zoth who provides her with a real body in exchange. N'zoth keeps the knife and the Horde PC eventually brings the knife to Sylvanas.

Meanwhile, the Horde find the body of Derek Proudmoore entirely by accident. In retaliation for the Alliance killing Rastakhan, Sylvanas decides to resurrect him where he'll be brainwashed into serving the Horde before he's sent over to Jaina. Somehow, this is the tipping point for Baine and he conspired to free Derek and releases him over to Jaina. Sidenote: the place was kinda doomed to fail because Jaina immediately assumes her zombie brother is a bomb and was ready to kill him. Sylvanas performs her most evil act yet and...arrests Baine for treason because he murdered dozens of Horde soldiers so he could surrender an extremely important prisoner of war to enemy hands. The obvious, blatant cruelty of this heinous act causes the other Horde leaders to start questioning their warchief.

Anduin lets Saurfang out and Saurfang goes to Nagrand to go get Thrall. They - along with Jaina and Matthias Shaw because I guess they have to pretend the Alliance is involved in this story - break into reused Siege of Orgrimmar assets and free Baine.

At some point during all this mess, there's some stuff with the night elves where Tyrande kills a val'kyr but I hand to god don't remember anything about it.

Sylvanas sends you and a bunch of Horde forces on an ocean mission with her bitch-boy, Nathanos. Nathanos is seen wielding the now nonliving Xala'tath as the Horde ships are pursued by the Alliance. Suddenly the ocean fuckin' disappears and all of the ships fall down a big hole into the ocean floor. Azshara shows up and says, yo what up welcome to my crib remember I can drop the ocean and kill you whenever. You do a rep grind until you find a magic spear that lets you break the shield around the Tidestone, the super important and powerful Pillar of Creation from that the naga were trying to steal in legion. Apparently we left it completely unguarded. This isn't a joke, Azshara literally says it was left unguarded. Anyway we get it, I think so Azshara can't drop the ocean on us anymore. She invites us into her palace which is the raid.

Once you're in the raid fighting Azshara, it's revealed that she let you live - which is obvious cuz she didn't drop an ocean on you - so you would bring the Heart of Azeroth to a Titan facility beneath the palace. She drains the Heart and frees N'zoth.

That's the Darkshore stuff. Tyrande does some Night Warrior shit, gets uber powerful and then Blizz just kind of... does nothing with her and she kills a Val'Kyr and Nathanos gets away, because of course he does.

In the cutscene released today, Anduin, Saurfang, Thrall, all them folks bring an army to Orgrimmar's doorstep because I guess that's just something you can do. Rather than fighting Horde soldiers which are just following their warchief, Saurfang challenges Sylvanas to mak'gora which I guess is something he forgot he could do when we were killing Horde soldiers in Siege of Orgrimmar. Anduin gives him Shamalamam, his dad's sword, which is honestly a cool moment.

Sylvanas accepts and promptly proceeds to kick his ass because Chuck Norris memes are nothing compared to the force of thousands of WoW nerds jerkin' it to your rule 34 fanart. She makes the mistake of stopping to shit-talk and then allows him to monologue in response. The power of a cutscene monologue evens the power levels and Saurfang throws some hits that she easily blocks until he finally cuts her eye a little. Because someone spoke to her, she got really mad and screamed that the Horde and everyone around her was the n-word (ie nothing). Saurfang charges with a "FOR AZEROTH" battlecry, but Sylvanas instantly murks him with a blast of banshee energy because it really makes no sense that warriors still exist when guns and powerful magic are literally everywhere. She does a little bad guy speech and Team Rocket blasts off.

Now that her approval rating is zero, even inexplicably among the Forsaken who until five minutes ago worshipped her with the fervent devotion of Ben Shapiro at the altar of AOC's feet, the gates of Orgrimmar open to Thrall and Anduin as they carry Saurfang's body into the city.

There's an after-that cutscene with Sylvanas where she puts down some foreshadowing. She states that while Saurfang ended the war prematurely, thousands of souls had been fed to "the hungering darkness." She claims that her deal with Azshara will still bear fruit. That the armies of Azeroth will fight N'zoth and he will line the streets with corpses. It's basically a lot of talk implying that she has conspired to kill a fuckload of people for some other entity or force.

This reminds me that I forgot one minor plotline, the investigation into what the hell told Vol'jin to make Sylvanas warchief. Vol'jin's memory is a little spotty since, y'know' he died, so you take him on a tour. First you go the Broken Shore where he was mortally wounded. They explain him dying to some no-name felguard by saying something was helping the Legion to attack him. Then to Orgrimmar's throne room where he didn't see any of the loa when he died, so now he thinks it was something else that told him to make Sylvanas warchief. They check in with Bwonsamdi to see if he did it, but he points out that Sylvanas turns all of the people she kills into undead and he doesn't get those souls so he'd have no reason to.

Bwonsamdi sends you and company to the Lich King, one of his rivals in the death business. Bolvar states that he had nothing to do with it and that Vol'jin is "more altered" than he realizes. He tells you to gtfo and sends some ghouls after you to convince you of that. Then you go to Eyir who also claims to have nothing to do with it, but states that Vol'jin is now something beyond even her power to forge. This leads Vol'jin to conclude that whoever brought him back and whoever told him about Sylvanas are different entities. Bwonsamdi is out of ideas and tells Vol'jin to check the Shadowlands for answers.

One more note of foreshadowing on this front, Bwonsamdi the big bad loa of death, at one point claims he has a boss. So Shadowlands expansion is probably happening.

Yeah, I quit playing shortly before it was released and came back a couple weeks ago. Nothing involved in that made me think it was important.
