A couple of my friends had larger parties for their 30th, which were mostly just "let's rent a hall and invite a lot of people" to the point where it almost felt like a wedding reception sort of deal, but in those cases it was very much a sort of mental acknowledgement of "after this, no more birthdays ever". He grew up without any friends, had parents who didn't love him and never really had any luck with the ladies, unless he was buying them stuff that he couldn't really afford to be buying. He was pretty ugly and they always left when the money ran out. I can understand why he felt the way he did about celebrating his life. Two other friends had their dirty 30 soon after mine so I planned a dinner with about 20 of us to cover mine and their dirty 30. I can respect the holidays that people actually practice but those people who just use the holiday as a day off of work because they are not interested in or do not respect the particular holiday are just wasting a day away for no reason and no gain to either themselves or society as a whole. And the holidays that exist solely to push products out the door simply dont deserve to be a get out of work free card for anyone. --- Que sera, sera.
