they just started announcing this like a few hours ago

https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/08/us/pge-power-shutdown-california/index.html

how does this come out of nowhere

My apartment is basically on the border of the effected zone, so I'm not sure if I'm gonna lose power or not... ugh

It says in the first paragraph!

Two California utilities said they may cut power to more than 900,000 customers for days starting after midnight Wednesday morning because of dry winds that could down power lines and cause fires.

They don't want another paradise situation

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

I assume it refers to wind where the relative humidity drops and is thus more conducive for wildfires.

you let your infrastructure degrade over decades because you have no interest in spending money on maintaining and upgrading it

Do they...do they not just have the "technology" to automatically cut power if lines go down?

Technology in air quotes because it seems like a simple GFCI would work to me.

The state wanted to pass a bill to make utility companies more liable for fires. PG&E responded by saying, okay, then we'll be super safe and preemptively cut power to 800k people. It's pretty much the same bullying tactics Amazon used with Seattle.

Running the lines is dangerous under these conditions. What they should actually be doing is undertaking major efforts to replace nearly century old infrastructure thats still in use.

They literally doubled their profits in 2017 while not taking care of their power lines caused an absolute disaster of a fire in California.

So lets just let them continue acting as was while they cost the state billions of dollars in damages.
