The chance of finding an upgrade or some other cool new thing is a great way to keep people rolling the dice. The battle royale model means you're finding upgrades literally every game (since you start with nothing; the same applies to Rogueli(t/k)es), and Fortnite tacks on random cosmetic loot as well for another layer of random reward. Toss in that matches are relatively short and easy to start, meaning you don't have to put any effort into getting another chance to roll those dice, and you've got a thoroughly addicting gameplay loop.
