the only thing i really remember from that film is the scene with the paul character constantly ringing up his boss or whatever, and i only remember it because the guy playing paul played the character of napoleon wilson in one of my favorite carpenter films, assault on precinct 13.

his movies tend to be really surreal and disturbing, and use dreamlike occurrences to move characters/events around to fill in the gaps of whatever mystery is taking place.

I like most of his stuff, but I hated Eraserhead.

Lynch has admitted that a lot of his stuff doesn't even fully make sense to him and they are often based on dreams and nightmares
which is fine

Once you recognize the common thread through all of his bullshit, it's less impressive.

Still unique, though. And he deserves credit for going there.

I heard/read somewhere (can't remember which) that the more recent his films, the more coherent... the earliest ones had the most ambiguity...

The first 40 minutes are probably the scariest thing I've seen in a movie.

I like the lynch version of Dune. It's baroque and alien. So, it got the vibe of the book right. Just too many liberties with the source material.

There's almost no way they could have pulled that book off in one film anyway.

If you want to try a Lynch film that's a bit less confusing try Blue Velvet or Wild At Heart. Blue Velvet is basically a story about the darkness lurking just under the surface of society and features Dennis Hopper pretty much just being himself (which is of course fucking awesome) and Wild At Heart is just the Wizard of Oz...but starring Nicholas Cage and filtered through David Lynch's psychadelic brain fluid.

I love Lost Highway.

It's best to view his urban surrealism as a kind of paranormal modern mystery thing but from the perspective of the thing itself. It's the kinda thing that happens and then Mulder and Scully would go to investigate later.

Anyway, from what I can gather of the movie,

Fred finds a way to go back in time and kill the porn producer who extorted his wife in the past. He does this with the help of the white faced guy who demonstrated there technology to him at the party by being in two places at once. When he says "we met before at your house" he was telling the truth but it hadn't happened to Fred at that time yet.

If you watch the scene just before Fred "murders his wife" he didn't actually do it. You can see them going up the staircase. Two bodies go up the stairs but three shadows follow them.

Yeah I watched this movie a lot.

One theory I read was that

It's all in Fred's mind.

He's on death row awaiting execution.

He replays the events out in his mind.

People look different and have different names because that's how dreams and memories work.

The person who wrote this said it seems to be about guilt, blame and acceptance.

And the car chase never happened either.

That was him being taken to the gallows and dying in the electric chair.
