It's the kinda thing that happens and then Mulder and Scully would go to investigate later. Anyway, from what I can gather of the movie, Fred finds a way to go back in time and kill the porn producer who extorted his wife in the past. He does this with the help of the white faced guy who demonstrated there technology to him at the party by being in two places at once. When he says "we met before at your house" he was telling the truth but it hadn't happened to Fred at that time yet. ~~If you watch the scene just before Fred "murders his wife" he didn't actually do it. You can see them going up the staircase.
