To be honest the membership seems like a good deal. The atoms alone are worth the cost of the price, and you get a bunch of other bonuses. Seems like they are copying ESO Plus. This would be pretty cool if the game was actually worth playing

are people actually buying this

It's the standard micro-transaction practice these days, get people to purchase 'convenience' items. Players hate 'pay to win' so you instead offer them 'time savers'.

The timing of this is hilarious considering Outer Worlds is out tomorrow but I'm still not really sure what this is.

Is it just the right to host a private game? Or are you actually using a private dedicated server? The latter seems implied but it's not outright stated. Like if you invite 7 other people do they get to use the server you're paying for as well even if you're not online?

Only the owner of a private world is required to be a Fallout 1st member. Head into your private world, open your Social menu once youre in-game, and start inviting your friends to kick off the party. You can also create a squad outside of your private world and then switch to it to bring everyone along at once. Should the owner of the private world leave, the world will still stay active as long as one other player in the world is a Fallout 1st member.

It doesn't really sound like a dedicated server to me which could be the one thing that would justify this price.

At least 1 person who paid for the 'Fallout 1st' subscription must be in the server, or it goes offline.

You also cannot mod the server. It's just a private instance of the basic game.

Yeah that's the impression I have too. Which is completely awful. What is even being paid for? This costs more than Game Pass.

So get this, right?

It's a Fallout game but there's no NPCs, and thus no dialogue trees. The typical Bethesda bugs and glitches with an extra dose of instability due to being an online multiplayer game. Hardly any content. Story is conveyed entirely through computer logs and holotapes. Tons of microtransactions despite initially being a $60 game. Nuclear launch codes in game were not randomized, thus people could literally set off a bunch of nukes at one time and totally crash the server.

But none of that compares to the lolworthy drama surrounding the game. You had a stress test that took place like 2 weeks before the game's release. Literal false advertising because the collector's edition featured canvas bags in all its marketing material, only for people to end up with cheaper Nylon bags (even though YouTube channels invited out to events by Bethesda got canvas bags) without any warning. Then when Bethesda was called out on it, they basically went "Oh yeah, we had to switch to Nylon material cuz it was cheaper. Sorry."

Then came more backlash, which prompted Bethesda to "make it up" to the players by giving them an amount of Atoms (digital currency) that wasn't even enough to buy a Canvas bag in-game. Then they eventually decided to make the actual canvas bags and give them to collector's edition customers...except that resulted in their personal information being leaked...and the Canvas bags wouldn't be available for another 6-8 months anyway.

There's probably more that I'm missing but long story short, Fallout 76, even almost a year after its release, is still the gift that keeps on giving.

You'd need to keep your console or PC constantly running Fallout 76 with your player standing there to do that.

I wouldn't go that far. While fallout 76 is the failure that keeps failing worse I still think Bethesda has a better chance making a good game then Bioware.

Literally the only thing Bethesda is good at is making sprawling open world RPGs in first person view. Starting with Skyrim they've been really great at shaving off all the "fat" (you know, the best tasting stuff) and leaving the bare minimum possible meaningful content while relying on radiant quests to fill in the blanks.

They rely way too heavily on the community to add content and fix glitches.

And yet I can't imagine Anthem being hit with a $100 annual subscription. At least Bioware know when they've fucked up. Bethesda joke about it on a stage and then dig in deeper.

if they infect elder scrolls 6 and fallout 5 with this

They will. IF they ever make Fallout 5. ES6 is definitely in development though, featuring what will be the fanciest 20 year old engine at that point. Many of the old bugs will return, and need modders to fix them... AND there will be a ton of monetization crammed into the title. Bethesda is already selling Daedric armor for Skyrim, even if right now it's an 'alternative skin' based on their Skinner Box Blades iteration. So expect ES6 to paywall Daedric in its entirety.

In summation, Bethesda is dead as a developer until they prove otherwise. As of now they're essentially a 'mobile game with paywalls' trash developer masquerading as a classic development studio.

Here's a shovel for next time.

Two of the things players immediately noticed were broken with the subscription;

1- The servers aren't nearly as private as the term "private servers" indicates. Anyone on your friends list can stroll in and out on a whim.
2- The scrap storage bin has a habit of deleting the scrap you put in it.
