Just finished Fallout 4 and spent 110+ hours on it. Im almost sad to leave it because I loved it so much and theres still a ton to do.

I have a save file midway through my play through, which I could go back and get the achievements for siding with the other factions (siding with the institute, etc)...

Or I could start New Vegas instead. Is it as wonderful as Fallout 4? I played Fallout 3 years ago and I remember it being fun but not nearly as amazingly or as memorable as 4

I've played nv for like 900 hours on 3 different systems.

4 is okay, but all of the companions are uninteresting and the factions are dumb as shit. I don't want to side with any of them, honestly.

They're both good for different reasons. New Vegas if you want to affect the story, FO4 if you want action.

In terms of story I would say FO: New Vegas is better. In terms of gameplay, hard to say. I think both are enjoyable in their own little way.

Kinda bad that despite your typo in my mind I read it as Fallout New Vegas.

I wouldn't say 4 had better gameplay, it was smoother, sure. But all of the battles when you have guns are trivial

I love/loved NV and have replayed it many times, probably over 1000 hours.

Fallout 4 I have tried to play 3 or 4 times so far, but maybe got 20 hours in at most, on my furthest playthrough. I still mean to go back and actually play through it/finish it and even try the DLC I bought....but something always comes up.

I actually have a plan to play outer worlds first (tomorrow) then when done Fallout 3 (so love it) then NV (also love love) and then finally after I have JUST FINISHED replaying the others, fallout 4 (Because a big reason I stop playing fallout 4 is I compare it to 3/NV and end up wanting to play them instead.

I'm hoping this will help me get far enough into fallout 4 to start enjoying it....it's the start of the game that really throws me off.

As expected, I'm in the minority with Fallout 4. What puts 4 over the top for me is the settlements. I just find them a lot of fun. If you don't count the settlements, it's still NV > 4 > 3. 3 might have slightly better gameplay, but 4 has the better story. I'd actually put 4's followers about on par with NV.

Part of my love for 4 was because Im from Boston and I loved seeing all the landmarks. I loved most of the stories as well, and if thats the case Ill probably love the stories of NV even more

But new vegas is the better game in my opinion. More freedom to play the way you want to and I like how often your unique playstyle offers different solutions to objectives

If I didn't mention it, I loved the VATs system, which is a BIG reason I liked 3/nv over 4. They also seemed (to me) to have more of an RPG feel to them, with an ability to customize characters etc (But part of that was also due to VATs being able to implement RPG elements better.

Fallout 4 had more of a FPS feel, with minor RPG aspects added in, and as mentioned above settlement management as well.

That isn't what I was looking for, and taken by itself the game is probably great, but I kept comparing the RPG elements and combat to NV and Fallout 3 before it....and comming up wanting.

I can't get far into 4...without missing NV basically....so I decide to go play that instead and then just end up playing some other new game on my list. It's frustrating.

Never liked the subway system much either but you can fast travel once you get anywhere, and still explore much of the game above ground anyway. Fallout 3 was epic on release and the initial love I had for the game has stayed with me, even if NV is probably better over all. Even though I have played Fallout 3 at least twice as many times as NV, my initial urge is to go play it again lol. NV.....was fun, but I felt like I could get very powerful fast without trying to hard (gambling for unlimited money, cybers to boost stats etc).

Fallout 3, you really had to work for the bobble heads to boost stats, and I don't know it just felt more challenging for some reason. Also I loved the radio station in 3 and Three Dog etc...NV not as much.

Technically the main quest in 4 allows for more "role playing" than 3's, but yeah overall 3 has more RPG elements, skills, etc.

I'm still a little disgruntle that aiming for the crotch was removed in FO3 and FONV. That was such an amazing form of crowd control in FO and FO2.

LOL:)

I tried replaying FO a year or so ago (wasn't a remastered version if they made one) and it was so slow, it was basicallyunplayable at this point for me. Makes me sad as I really loved the first 2 games but it's been so long all I remember is you need a water filter part or something lol.

Been a decade since I replayed either of em, maybe 2.

But yeah, when I tried last time I was like, how did I even play this?

Same. As much as I enjoyed FO2 at the time with my melee build and powerfist blowing holes in people's stomach, I tried playing again on Steam and it felt too archaic for me. Maaaybe one day I'll sit down and give it a try again.

NV was better 4. However; FO3 was my favorite of the FO games. I spent over 400 hours on that game. I thought NV was ok, but not great. I only beat it once.

I didn't get far in 4 before I just stopped playing it. I got bored. I don't know why because there's so much to do and see. It felt like something was "missing"

I voted that they're equally as good as New Vegas has the much better story, characters, missions, etc. while F4 has the much better gameplay. I'd love to see Obsidian make another Fallout game.

I don't know about Bew Vegas, but I'd say New Vegas is better than both FO3 and FO4. Possibly combined.

About the only thing FO4 has going for it as a positive is that it looks better in a number of ways than FO3/NV do using the older assets.

Oh, and I kind of like the mechanic for how power suits work in FO4, but it feels awkward after getting used to them working in an entirely different way in earlier games. Though I also like the ability to customize armor, limited as it is.

I'm not sure I'd really agree with this much at all. The narrative is still doing its best to railroad you into playing a very specific character and doing exactly what they want you to do, like an actor more than someone actually making choices. At most, the only real flexibility you have is picking which faction to side with, and that's almost cursory for the most part.

Worse, for people who really like to get into the nitty-gritty of character personality when RPing, you're kind of fucked in both, because in one they literally show most of your childhood and spell out for you exactly how you grew up and who you grew up with (which kind of funnels you into a very specific sort of personality), while 4 goes farther and literally shows you as a parent with a specific spouse and a specific career in a specific society, which kind of typecasts you just as much.

It's not like New Vegas or even the Elder Scrolls games, where the question to "Who am I?" usually starts out with an answer of "Fuck if I know, you figure it out" from the game.

This... doesn't seem right. I can't say for 100% sure, but when I went from NV to FO4 I don't remember there being that major a problem, and I feel like you should be able to remap controls because it's a thing I always want to do with Bethesda games (because of their stupid insistence on the idea that the Jump button should be on top (Y/Triangle) instead of on the bottom (A/X))

But yeah, it's so much like NV 2......innnnnnn spaaaaaaaace....that it's kinda funy.

Don't mod new vegas the first time, just play it straight up, that game rocks. Play with mods later, but enjoy the base game at least once (and maybe 2-3 times with different builds hehe).

You always gotta replay through as a homicidal hobo death murder machine at least.

While I'm definitely going for a vanilla experience, I'm also looking to improve things as much as I can.

Graphics are gonna worked on. I also have to choose a good ENB.

I'm also keeping an eye out for quality-of-life things. Like when I played Witcher 3, I made sure Geralt had the ability to jump in ankle-deep water, the blood textures were nicer, and that the weather effects were of better quality. I wouldn't have wanted to play the game without stuff like that!

@JCvgluvr

Im all for heavily modding the game first playthrough.

Here are the Nexus mods best mods:
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/?tab=popular+%28all+time%29

I got all new textures for the world, much nicer and handsome character models, revamped weapon models, new fauna, weather effects, enhanced visual/particle/blood effects, and new monsters based off mutants from older games.

Then one of the final ones I got was one that added bullet time, variable scope magnifications and hotkeys for explosives.

Made it feel like an actual sequel.

So there's no (GWA) variants of weapons that are the only ones that can be modded.

The npcs in Fallout 3 are destitute and in cheerful denial or are hypocrites. There's a chummy 50's sense were raiders make lame threats like "I may not be so nice next time." Other people are steeped in ignorance or terribly misguided.

I get very little of this in Fallout 4's npcs. The computer terminal bureaucracy antics are more like FO3. But 94% of FO4's vibe is debbie downer with too few instances of hilarious sidequests like USS Constitution.
