More than 2 decades in the making after billions spent..5 BILLION to be exact, the "American Dream" mall is finally opening its doors in New Jersey as the second largest mallin the country and third in North America. It has a 3 million sft of leasable space for more than a dozen entertainment attractions like a 16 story indoor ski slope, rollercoaster, waterpark, and 450 retail food and specialty shops.

The big question will be: Will anyone come?

In today's retail landscape, consumers prefer their Iphones and smartphones and can do without shopping in store without leaving the couch as Amazon has morphed into the biggest online retailerin the world

Traffic in malls have declined 10% since it's rise in the 90s and even though a quarter of shopping malls will close by 2022, this mall was still built..infact, only NINE have been built since 2015

The mall is expected to draw 45-50 million visitors a year as entertainment will account for more than half of its space including a BUNNY FIELD and aviary as well as a doggy daycare and luxury wing where shopperes can sit and drink CHAMPAGNE and sample caviar

In the opening day, roughly 3000 were invited as it was still a work in progress before it opens in the Spring of 2020 but most of the attractions were already built besides the ski slope and waterpark which should be done by the end of this year

Givoanni Scolari who lives nearby has a 7 y/o and grandchildrern who said "this is going to be a draw"

Don Ghermezian, the CEO of American Dream and Canada's Triple Five realized what was happening to the retail landscape and had to make a bigger statement with this despite the massive price tag as he expects to surpas sales at both Mall of America and West Edmonton Mall in Canada, the largest in North America

Jason Goldberg, the chief commerce strategy said this will either sink or swim as its tough to get a lot of attention when it's next to a bigger amusement park..Manhattan but that it could work to entice families to get to come here but it will also have to abide by blue laws meaning retail will be closed on SUNDAYS even though restaurants and theme parks are open

Will you go to this mall?

I bet it'll have hover-stores, and tele-scalators, and jet pack parking, and a food court.

The Great Mall sure didn't do well in CA, so, yeah, don't think this is gonna work out.....at all.

I mean the Great Mall was built back when people actually still went to malls, before Amazon etc.

At this point it's just wasting money, I doubt it'll be there in a decade.

Imagine spending 20 years and $5 billion dollars to build a mall that looks like a replica of the West Edmonton Mall and it still isn't the biggest mall in North America. And New Jersey of all locations?

Implying I ever read anything aside from the title in a duckbear topic.

Point still stands, malls are a relic of the 1980s.

It looks like more amusement park with stores, and while it isnt in NYC proper it is close by(traffic pending. 17 miles in NYC could be route 66).

Im not going to go, but it seems to have more to offer than just a normal mall. still would not surprise me if it failed.

Malls are a thing of the past. Much the way our grandparents shopped "downtown", malls replaced downtown stores beginning with the "White Flight" of the 1960s when White people began moving away from the cities across the country into newly emerging lily White suburbs.

Looks pretty amazing, but I doubt I'll ever see it. If I ever happen to be in the area I'll most likely go just to see it. Was done with Mall of America after an hour, don't expect this would be any different.
