For whatever reason, Riften was one of my favorites.

I liked the unique architecture of markarth but the insanity there is too much.

I kinda gravitated to Whiterun because it was so easy to hit all of the shops after loading up with loot, but Solitude was pretty cool.

Whiterun was the most convenient place to use as a main base and also had the most going on between the main quest and the fighters guild and so on. Riften was pretty neat too between the Black Briars and the thieves guild, but you can tell that the storyline was only half finished. Solitude looked pretty. Markarth looked neat too I guess but it was otherwise boring. The other cities were too boring to remember much about, other than Ulfric making his racist apartheid paradise city in Windhelm

Solitude and Falkreath, but I spent way more time in Riften.

Whiterun is the only place I can relax. Everywhere else is full of racists or corpses or racist corpses.

Markarth for architecture, riften for everything else. Love the darker seedier nature of it.

Markarth is my favorite. The architecture and geography are really quite beautiful. The quests are unique and pretty deep and well developed.

Mind you Id never want to live there if I was actually in the game. Forsworn, corruption, a haunted house, and cannibals makes for a fun game, also makes it a very crappy place to actually live. And the stairs would honestly kill your knees real fast.

Windhelm. I just love the bleak and very castle-like aesthetic of it. And the surrounding area is beautiful.

Aesthetically, Markarth. Also the house there holds the largest number of books, so if youre going to be collecting books along the way, thats a thing.

Functionally, like someone said above, I used Whiterun as my hub between quests. Two places to sell your weapons and armor as soon as you enter the city, and if I cant sell everything else to Belethor then the Riverwood Trader is usually a sufficient second stop. Also your house is right there at the entrance as well, if you want to store some stuff. Whiterun is just oozing with convenience, and thats a big deal in a game where you spend like 1/4 of your time scrolling through your inventory and menus.

White run also features most prominently in the story compared to other cities. Multiple story quests and side quests have you go there. It's also conveniently dead center in the map.
