I looked forward to it... saw that it came out but didnt want to drop the cash... and still havent despite several sales. I will eventually.

But I also havent finished Hollow Knight yet and I got that game in early 2017. God damn is HK a masterpiece. Cant wait for part 2.

Just another game among many I bought but got bored with after a few hours. I never end up actually playing them within 2 weeks of purchase or I guess I could return them. Last time I bought games I pretty much promised myself I would try them right away, and I ended up returnign all but one lol.

That is what I am going to do in the future.

Isn't that how most Indie titles go though? You get traction and popularity leading up to release before it's back to everyone forgets about your game.

There's some exceptions that manage to break the mold like Undertale or FNAF and manage to stay relevant for a while but for the most part it's the former.

What I'm referring to is how much good press Owlboy got before and during release.

If it was something like Siralim 3, which I love and had zero press, I'd understand that.

The art was good but the game itself wasn't particularly amazing. How many games really last in the public eye for very long though? Even games that were highly anticipated like Borderlands 3 just sort of come and go. What kind of reaction are you looking for? Something like Undertale?

Nah nah nah, everyone is getting me the wrong way here.

Yes, a regular indie game just disappearing is normal... it's ones that are so hyped disappearing that is weird.

I'm talking about the hype/staying power ratio

Yeah that makes sense, to be fair I think most of the hype from Owlboy came from the fact that it was in development for 12 years or something. There was an easy story that publications could latch onto. I don't think it would have received much press without that aspect of the development.

I mean...didn't it come out years ago? It was a great game and I played the hell out of it....but why would people still be talking about it now?

If they would work on a sequel....that might ignite people's interest in the first game more. That's usually how it goes.

Kinda like Hollow Knight. That was one of the best Metroidvanias I've ever played....and they ARE working on a sequel............but you still don't hear many people talk about it.

That's just how gamers are. And marketing departments only focus on the latest games. And politics.

I don't expect it to have years and years of appeal, I just thought it was weird that it just instantly disappeared

Lotsa video game gems tend to do that. It's kinda sad. Usually indie games, because all their budget goes into MAKING the game....and not advertising it.

Some of the best games I've ever played in my life....I would rarely see much coverage of. This includes the days/weeks/months immediately after the game launches. I can only ever find people talking about them if I really do some digging on YouTube, and it's usually tossed in with some kind of "indie game montage."

Hyper Light Drifter
Aegis Defenders
Iconoclasts
Owlboy
Children of Morta
Crossing Souls
Vane
Hard Corps Uprising

(just to name a few).

All amazing games.....and I wouldn't have known they even existed unless I paid very close attention to E3 coverage in the past and wrote these names down before they vanished into the void. And after they released you still barely heard anyone talk about them.

I consider myself pretty saavy on indie games and wow I haven't even heard of half of these. Are they all 2D Metroidvanias (my jam) or just indie games in general?

Hyper Light Drifter is an overhead pixel art Zelda-esque game.
Aegis Defenders is one part Metroidvania and one part tower defense. Pixel art. It's extremely unique and good!
Iconoclasts is an amazing pixel art Metroidvania.
Owlboy is a pixel art Metroidvania.
Children of Morta is an overhead Diablo pixel art roguelike.
Crossing Souls is an overhead pixel art action adventure puzzle game. Hard to describe.
Vane is a 3D realistic exploration puzzle game similar to Journey and Shadow of the Colossus. Extremely bizarre. But flying around as a bird has never felt more beautiful.
Hard Corps Uprising is a sidescrolling shooter. Technically a Contra game....but with anime. Some of the best hand-drawn sprites I've seen in a long time, with 3D backgrounds and bosses.

I almost forgot about Axiom Verge!

Others worth mentioning:

Moonlighter
Death's Gambit
Dead Cells
Blasphemous
Strider HD
Flower
Wizard of Legend
Songbringer
Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight

All amazing games! And never would have found any of them if I hadn't kept my eyes peeled and did a lot of research.

Some others I'd recommend are 100% Orange Juice (Mario Party), Environmental Station Alpha (metroidvania), Siralim (Pokemon), Mercenary Kings (Contra?), Town of Salem (Mafia/Werewolf), Grim Dawn (Better Diablo 3), Shellshock LIVE (scorched earth, tank), COGMIND (hard roguelike)

and of course Super Win the Game, Treasure Adventure World, La-Mulana 1 and 2, Salt&Sanctuary (which I knew of for a long time in development cuz the guy who made it is is the same one who made "I maed a gaem with zombies in it"), and Jotun/Sundered

An example of an indie game that was appropriately followed given its advertising would be Rogue Legacy. The hype lasted exactly the right amount of time.
