Has anyone here read the Stephen King books?

I loved them. Roland is an awesome character. The world was very unique and terrifying. It's an epic journey. The last 3 books get extremely bizarre (because of King's real life car accident near-death-experience).....and the ending had to be rewritten because of fan outcry...........but it's still his magnum opus.

The graphic novels are pretty good as well.

And there was talk for DECADES about adapting it into a film series, or TV series. Ron Howard was attached for the longest time. There were rumors about Viggo Mortensen playing Roland....and then Javier Bardem.....

And then, seemingly out of nowhere.....BAM! Idris Elba is Roland Deschaine of Gilead.....in a ONE movie deal....that isn't quite a sequel or a prequel, but an entirely new story!!!!

And fans were like.............."What. The. Actual. Fuck?"

And, big surprise......the movie failed. In literally every way imaginable.

And, sadly, because of that trash.....it lowers the chances of someone doing it right anytime soon....because nobody wants to touch something that failed so badly.

But it failed so badly because they TREATED it like trash. And everyone saw it coming.

How does crap like this happen?

The movie was so bad lol.

Ok, I'm done eating so now I can expand on this a bit.

First, after watching the movie, I feel like the directors and writers of the script never read the original books and literally just got a summary from someone and tried to adapt based on that.

Second the main characters (Well those that were actually included...which was only 2 of them) were seriously miss cast enough to ruin the movie even if they had based it off the first book (Which was good).

Roland is supposed to be reserved but heroic and likable (identificable for those reading/watching). I think Denzel could have worked well for the role if you wanted an african american, but there are so many white actors that would have done it really well. I kinda woulda liked to see Woody Harrison try the role if fact....but yeah the people who could have done it better are countless.

Then jake.....seriously......he is arguable the most important character in many ways, and is supposed to be charismatic and likeable, while literally being the groups heart in many ways. The kid they used was not bad, but he didn't actually bring anything to the role, and certainly didn't shine in it.

They clumped all the books into a very short movie which didn't do the story (and I didn't even like most of the story after the first book) any justice at all. I was never a massive fan of Ordiella (or however you spell it) but Eddie could have been really cool/fun especially if you had someone interesting play him (Have not seen Justin Timberlake in a movie lately and that could have been a great role for him to attempt).

Anyway it was an absolute horrid adaptation, especially since if they just adapted the first book alone, it could have easily rocked.

But oh well what ever.

I think it was originally supposed to be a much longer deal, with multiple movies and have Ron Howard produce / direct it. But he backed out and the production company still wanted to make a movie so they just greenlit 1 single movie with a terrible script

This crap happens all the time, sadly. The production companies don't care about the quality of the film, they only care about a release date and making money. So they hire a crap writer and a crap director just to make sure the movie comes out Christmas 2017 like they promised. And then the movie turns out to be shit.

i was just watching the making of Alien 3 and it looked like the same thing. The producers just greenlit a movie with no script and it turned out awful.

The laziness and greed just astounds me.

But when I needed to make a PowerPoint presentation in high school....the teacher would act like the fate of the universe was on our shoulders. Submitting drafts. Doing practice runs. Writing papers ABOUT the PowerPoint, etc. Making it into this epic adventure that lasted a month until we all have perfect presentations, that we would then do on the big screen in the auditorium for random faculty and staff to "sit in" on and watch.

And then you have Hollywood movies, with THOUSANDS of people involved.....with MILLIONS of dollars at stake....based on a critically acclaimed book series that has been around since the 70's.....and they're just like, "Pump the movie out. Quick. Who needs a script? We just want bank."

It's offensive.

Terrible Hollywood bastardization of an excellent book series.

A story like this would benefit more from a multiple season netflix series where you have time for the story to pan out.
