I know you think this is a bullet proof argument but public education has no prerequisite so it's really not even remotely comparable.

Tuition for poor families is already heavily subsidized by the government and schools to the point of basically being free, yet 75% of all college graduates are students that come from upper and middle-upper class families, like AOC. This is because tuition is not the main barrier for poor people getting into college.

Free tuition is a handout for rich people, the rich people just don't like admitting that.

No one said anything about loans. Tuition is already dirt cheap, if not free, for students from low-income families.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/24/tuition-at-public-universities-is-10230-a-year-on-average.html
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-10-09/make-sure-u-s-universities-remain-the-world-s-best

Most people aren't aware of this because the progressives arguing for free tuition aren't actually poor, they generally come from comfortable backgrounds like AOC does. And actual poor students aren't making it into college in the first place to take advantage of low tuition cost, which is my point.

Since tuition isn't the main barrier for poor people getting into college, making it free does nothing to help them. You can't give people free storage space for their yachts and then pretend it's not a handout for the rich. Rich kids going to college and getting even richer isn't a problem, we don't need to be paying for it.

The institutions, in this case, are public ones. This is what lowering their prices looks like: funding them via public revenue such that students are no longer charged tuition.

Which, I should note, is how these universities operated until the 60s.

Yes she did, this isn't some secret. She was born in the Bronx and then when she was five her whole family moved to a wealthy suburb. They could afford it because her dad was the president of an Architecture Firm. She had an upper class education and went to a good University where she interned for senators. Then she moved back into the Bronx after her dad died and she graduated college to bartend and pretended like she never left. Oh, and she started her own book publishing company before that but it only lasted a year or so.

That's not to say she didn't have her own struggles, but she is absolutely the byproduct of an upper-middle-class upbringing.

I'm not American but here's a take anyway:

Make things like medical and engineering part of the military. Keep university at cost but limit it to stuff that is more about creativity and discovery.

Edit: sure this could be worded more appropriately but the point should be clear enough

Going on Sanders website I dont see how exactly his guarantees it be free college education, unless I am reading it wrong. Happy to be corrected.

it seems that his plan is that the federal govt will match state spending for college tuition but it doesnt say what the requirements are.

it also doesnt specify how a college would not qualify from getting this funding. unsure how his (or any of the plans) would prevent colleges from way over charging the fed govt on what tuition should cost.

so a public university system can choose whether to join Sanders program or not. Also doesnt tackle if states will be penalized for charging out of state tuition to people applying out of state. Because in California we greatly subsidize our university system with the expectation to help California residents children.

If we go down this route I would want to see

1. How to make sure colleges dont just jack up rates on fed government because obviously that model is not sustainable

2. A fair system that reimburses colleges for costs from the fed government that doesnt cause the university to regress.

3. A system in place to prevent a person being a student for life, while also not having an unattended consequence of masters, ph.d, or teaching credentialing classes explode in costs

Im not opposed to tuition being funded by federal government, I just want more details before I can yell yaaasss qweeeen. Cuz Sanders plan vague AF
