I already got all I could have possibly asked for, between everyone being back, and my realistic most wanted after that (a Dragon Quest character) coming as part of the first fighter pass. At this point, my reaction to someone like Dante (maybe not the best example since I haven't played any of his games, but you get the gist) would basically be "cool, a big-name Smash character".

You can be honest and say "I'm enjoying this because it's pissing people off". It's ok =)

I mean, yes, that was at least implied in my first two posts. I still felt like explaining it that way because Byleth wouldn't be the best-case scenario for me if anyone whose announcement would produce a strong reaction from me was a remotely realistic prospect.

Or to put it another way, boiling things down to the basest level, it pissing people off is why I'm enjoying Byleth's announcement so much. However, as MoogleKupo sussed out, that in and of itself doesn't explain why it's the best-case scenario for me.

It would've been so much cooler if they did something similar to Pokemon Trainer and let you switch between the house leaders. It would've been way more unique and have given better FE coverage.

That said for me Banjo alone was worth the price of the fighters pass, so I'm really not upset.

Ok watched the direct. Sakurai is so happy with his character, the stage looks good, and I love three houses music. I'll take it.

Plus the house leader costumes look really good, one of the pros of this fire emblem game having no individual fashion for the characters is that from a distance it will be like actually playing Claude.

But no god shattering star or tempest of seasons in the music? Booooo

I'm way less salty than in the first few minutes and am totally into it now. Maybe the new 3 Houses DLC just put me in a mood for it again.

I think that Three Houses getting a rep would've been okay in a vacuum, since it is a big game. The main problem is that there's way too many Fire Emblem characters from the 3DS games:

- Awakening should've had just Robin. Chrom and Lucina being echo fighters isn't enough of an excuse. Awakening might get a lot of praise but getting 3 reps of its own is like Ocarina of Time levels of honor.
- Fates didn't really need a rep; it might've sold more than Awakening but it was a very polarizing game. And Corrin is very polarizing too for that matter.

Plus Edelgard arguably would've been a better choice than Byleth. Especially since *MAJOR THREE HOUSES SPOILERS* she doubles as a villain, which elevates her importance and gives Fire Emblem a villain rep.

I can now no longer say that my three favourite games in the series are represented by I believe two spirits and two songs (from one game). Though to be fair Three Houses logically couldn't have been represented prior to DLC of course, it was just kind of a funny thing to note.

Banjo's the only one I ended up wanting to buy (though Joker's cool and I don't mind Hero or Terry). But honestly, even if I did buy the other four, I would deadass rather have that extra buck than Byleth.

Echoes and Genealogy (Thracia is actually my least favourite). Off the top of my head the Jugdral games have nothing in Smash, Gaiden/Echoes has a couple of spirits, the Celica player phase theme that's been around since Brawl and Rudolf's battle theme. I could be missing one or two things, particularly on the spirit side.

Genealogy has the song from the Battle of Belhalla, as well as Sigurd, Deirdre, Seliph, Julius, and Leif (though with his Thracia art) as spirits.

This may be true, but what's done is done. I don't think Awakening being overrepped is a good reason to deprive the most well-received game in the franchise a spot in Smash.

(And frankly there are pretty good reasons to cut fewer characters than you'd like. Fates is one of the most liked games in the series (see: it regularly getting the highest total votes in the FEH character popularity polls) not to mention a huge seller. Lucina is literally the only FE character who is female by default in Smash which I think is an important inclusion (granted, they could have flipped one or more of the avatars to avoid this) and easily one of the series' most popular characters to boot. I won't defend Chrom (even though I like him), but eh, he's an echo.)

Anyway having some time to reflect and actually seeing the love put in to the choice (stage, outfits, music, having all the relics instead of just "hey it's yet another sword but this one's a whip!") has made me much happier about it.

They should switch the default gender for the avatars. The female smash designs of Robin and Corrin are both way better (and in Corrins case the male one is terrible)

The problem is that Roy is a Melee character by fanbase, not a fire emblem character, so he's probably not going to get a cut.

I mean the same goes for all the dead series characters, can you imagine a smash game without captain falcon? Yeah none of the kids these days have played or even been alive during the era of F-Zero but everyone would go bonkers if he wasn't in it.

A smash remake would essentially have to build off the melee roster, which isn't necessarily something I want but I think it's the only way to do it.

Roy is also a very popular FE character as well. So I don't think they would want to cut him if they could help it. I mean every FE character is someone's favourite. Cuts are going to hurt no matter who you choose.

Thinking about it, the Melee roster had several cuts.

Nothing is truly safe beyond the original set.

I'm not even sure that's true. Jigglypuff was one of the last characters added to Brawl. It's why it wasn't in the SSE.

IIRC both Jigglypuff and Ness were considered to be cut in Melee. But I think cutting Jigglypuff in Brawl would've done much less damage than doing it after 5 games.

If anything I'd argue Roy (along with Chrom) is the most likely Fire Emblem character to be cut. Lucina likely makes it unless Nintendo wants to get rid of echoes while at least one of Robin/Corrin/Byleth gets cut to make room for the next Fire Emblem main character.

Gotta be honest, I'm actually surprised by how well the Smash fanbase is taking this. I thought the overall reaction was gonna be much more vitriolic. Instead, the dissenters have mostly been relatively calm (from what I've seen anyway) and a lot of people have defended Byleth's inclusion.

The reactions to Isabelle and Incineroar seemed a lot harsher tbh.
