I think my card gives me 1% back straight up. I only charge like $6k a year, so I get a whopping.... $60/year to use the card. woohoo 60 whole bucks, I could just work a couple hours more. I'd rather just use a debit card at this point to avoid the headache

Are there cards with really good rewards?

Yeah there are. Some you pay an annual fee on. Bank of America has a card that would let you get 5% if you banked with them while simultaneously having their card. Walmart's gets you 5% on everything purchased there. A couple you get a flat rate of 2% on everything like Citi's where you get 1% on what you buy and 1% when you pay the bill

Often though the highest rewards cards only applies to specific categories so you need multiple to really take advantage

Tbph though you should always use a credit card over debit because dealing with someone else stealing your card information and charging it on your credit card is much easier than if they do with your debit

Yes. You also have to use your card much more often to appreciate it. I've had my Discover It card since July and have over 300 bucks in rewards. And that's like an entry level card

regular rewards are meh. yeah you can earn a flight, but they're like 40k roundtrip. have fun spending 40k.

sign up bonuses, on the other hand, is where the real rewards are. sign up for a card, hit the bonus, get the 50k points or whatever it is, then close it (when you can or keep it open to help your credit report). find a new card. do it again.

thats how i took my fiancee to korea on business class 2 years ago. 3 signup bonuses from chase got us 150k chase points and we were able to redeem it via united for business class tickets, which would have cost $16,000 USD

Don't you usually have to spend X dollars after signing up to get those rewards? It always seemed like a ton -- I think the United deal was like you get a free flight if you charge $3k in the next month

Sign up bonuses have also been toned down in recent time.

Youd rather work then do absolutely nothing for $60?

my local bank makes me manually pay each month, there's no automatic pay. So I feel like I already work for that $10. And if I forget I get charged way more than $60 I'm sure

There's your problem. You have a shitty bank. If you're going to do local you should be at a credit union anyway unless you live in some podunk town and have no choice

I hate all the rotating category bs so I just use my Citi Double Cash back for nearly all my purchases. It's super simple and 2% back ain't half bad. It's a few hundred dollars a year for me, for essentially doing nothing.

yeah. i think it was like 3k each.

if you dont have a lot of spending to do, it can be hard. i paid all my bills, groceries, etc. and i usually met it within 2 months.

obviously, dont go buy a tv just so you can get a bonus lol.

you used to be able to buy gift cards and use the gift cards to pay off the cards lol, but most of those methods got shut down by the banks or issuers lmao. those were the days.

If it's a card with a fee, only if you get more back than the fee. If there is no fee, then it's literal free money even if it's chump change. So long as you don't carry a balance that incurs interest, there's literally nothing to lose, plus gaining good credit over time. The only reason not to do it is if you're horrible with money management.

It looks like you e got a s**** bank and should probably look to changing it asap. Otherwise cashback/reward points is free money, not counting the other perks they can have.

It helps more so since most people dont have enough savings to be able to take advantage savings accounts. And that's assuming your bank even offers a decent % back.

What headache? Lmao if you use your credit card more you can get more cash back. There's literally no reason to not use your credit card for every transaction that allows it.

i learned that lesson when i was 21 when i couldn't get my checks cashed at bank of america. wanting to charge 40$ to cash a 500$ check.

think i went full credit union at that time. free popcorn and coffee back then with just a 3$ monthly fee for card use/check cashing.

Waiting for pending transactions to post and transfers to complete dozens of time a year is more of a headache than 60$

I forget the exact percentages, but my main card that I use day to day is an Amazon rewards card, I think its maybe 1% back on everything and 3% on things bought from Amazon? Something like that. I charge way more than 6K a year though, so it adds up quicker. Used to be what I'd use to get video games or blurays but now its usually just crap for my kid, but at least its "free money."
