I also posit a few bonus questions to spark more discussion

  1. At what point does your Metroidvania become a Zelda?
  2. Could there be a good Sonic metroidvania? (or if not the character proper, just a game where you go fast and whatever)

Hollow Knight is one of the best games I have ever played in the metroidvania genre.

There is a constant sense of progression as you collect powerups and unlock new areas and story bits. Even when you have everything the game still throws intense challenges at you. It is the Dark Souls of metroidvanias.

  1. When you put your metroidvania into a three dimensional world.
  2. No, sonic would not make a good metroidvania game, but would make a fantasti Mario Maker game (Sonic Maker).

I guess Guac. I haven't played the others and I'm too medicated to think of anything else.

Mummy Demastered or Iconoclasts

1. If the game is in 3d or from a top down perspective.
Metroidvania requires the sidescrolling perspective.

2. Sure, it could work. It wouldnt be the greatest, but i think it could work

Looks like I have games to find. Unless they're on Steam then forget it.

Played Guac 1, Axiom, and Rabi, those were cool. Mulana releases physical in March. Guac 2, Hollow, Bloodstained, and Iconoclasts on backlog. Not sure if Blasphemous or Valfaris counts in this genre, all I've seen is a couple clips.

All I know is indies are almost giving us too much to play.

To be fair, Bloodstained is SotN2 in all but the sprites and SotN more or less was the genesis of half of the term MetroVania.

Something being a Metroidvania has nothing to do with perspective or 2D vs 3D.

What would you consider a 3D Metroidvania? I also say 2D is really what we have in mind with the term. Once you toss things like Ocarina or the Prime trilogy in there it gets confusing.

Bloodstained Ritual of the night was such a great experience for me, loved every second of it and I almost couldn't put it down until I finished it! 9.4/10 from me.

Axiom Verge was a close second for me because it had more of a "Super Metroid meets Probotector/Contra" vibe with AWESOME music!
Even my wife wouldn't let me play it unless she could watch me explore the game, she watched every second until I finished that wonderful game XP I love that woman ^_^ 9.4/10

Why'd you specify Shantae remake?

Anyway, Shantae is one of the few on the list that I've played, and I love that. Just found out about the new game too.

The original had zero slant exploration, so it was basically a linear level-based platformer... it would be like if in Megaman you had to actually walk to Wily's Castle it were suddenly a Metroid.

Haven't played anything listed.
I'm really enjoying Steamworld Dig 2 atm, then I'm moving on to Ori and Hollow Knight.

I played Shantae: Half-Genie Hero recently. It's a lot of fun but really short even if you 100% it. It's the only one out of the list that I've played.

Probably depends on what you're looking for.

My opinion of it is mostly based on watching other people play it online. And I dislike platormers in general and Metroidvania-type games specifically, so you definitely need to take that into account when I'm reviewing something.

But it looks like a relatively fun time-waster. I definitely wouldn't pay $60 for it, and I'm not sure I'd even want to pay $30 for it (which is what they're actually charging), but if goes on sale for less I might consider it.

It almost sort of feels like a stripped-down version of No Man's Sky aesthetically, except there's actually goals. Neither the platforming or the combat seems overly complicated (which is a plus for me, but maybe a negative for others), and the doubling back to earlier areas to use new upgrades seems relatively simplistic (though I've really only seen the early parts of gameplay), so if you're looking for challenging gameplay it might disappoint.

The narrative mostly tries to be humorous (I've heard it described as a "less subtle Outer Worlds", which I'd agree is an apt description), which could be a plus for some people and a negative for others (but it's part of the appeal for me). And there are implications of a deeper plot early, but I have no idea if those actually pay off later, or lead to absolutely nothing (because again, I've really only seen the early parts of gameplay).

Yeah, but while every game since then is a true Metroidvania, only one game was a remake. And that was like two and a half games ago.

it's an old, retired name that should have been put down long ago, ok?
