Have read some news people bring this up before. That it's been years since huge movies were nominated, like titanic, forest gump, sixth sense etc..... esp. for best pic. .Iirc this has led to a decline in viewership in the oscars. Has a huge movie been nominated in 15 yrs? Can't really remember .

Is it the oscars this weekend or something? I don't watch em, nor do I plan on it, so what movies etc get nominated don't really matter. In the other thread they talked about having anime added, I might watch if that happened (as long as it wasn't just 1 award among many and a bunch of drama crap movies I never care about for the rest.

Joker was nominated this year. That's the only huge movie nominated and that's only because it's a countercultural icon. Still deserves the nomination though. --- "In the name of the future moon I shall punish you"-Chibi Moon ... Copied to Clipboard!

Also, Dune is coming out later this year. People are hailing it as the next Lord of the Rings, which it very well could be because
1) it's Dune. Dune's awesome 2) it's directed by Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve is the master of big budget scifi. So if any big hollywood movie this year will be big at the Oscars, it'll be Dune. --- Nintendo Network ID: papercups 3DS FC: 4124 5916 9925 ... Copied to Clipboard!

yea. when I was a kid, Best Picture was exciting. for years now, most nominees and the usual winners are movies most people haven't even seen.

Most of this year's nominees were huge Hollywood movies. (And Parasite is easily one of the best Best Picture winners we've ever had)

1) it's Dune. Dune's awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzUlXEyvJeA papercup posted... 2) it's directed by Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve is the master of big budget scifi. Apart from Arrival and Blade Runner, he hasn't been all that successful in terms of awards or financially. It isn't really a lock that Dune will be a success on any level, and it could easily wind up being a spectacular clusterfuck. Of course, it could be great. Maybe it does so well it ushers in a new future where it replaces Star Wars as the tentpole sci-fi franchise, and they go on to make movies out of all six of his Dune books, and maybe even his son's dozen or so shitty continuation books. Or maybe it becomes a laughingstock everyone tries to forget about like Lynch's version. Or maybe it just sort of quietly dies like John Carter did, because the average viewing public isn't all that interested in sci-fi books written more than 50 years ago. Definitely no guarantees that it does well at the Oscars, though, considering they've always had a strong bias against sci-fi, except in cases where they literally can't justify snubbing it. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ...
