The first game of a specific type, sports, action, RPG, racing etc. Whichever you want or...you feel was most impactful.

For me, it was Wizardry Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

I got and played it on my Apple computer in 1980. There were (to my knowledge) no real RPG games up till that point.
I had played Man Myth and Magic (prequel to DND) and I believe some DnD first edition already, but there were no RPG
games yet for computers.

This was still in the age where many of us (including myself) actually created the games on floppy discs and distributed them through warehouses. Wizardry though was actually sold in stores.

I can't wax poetically enough about how amazing this game was for the time. Zork, I am sure, was around before it (memory isn't great but i'm almost 100%), but it was an adventure game, text based only, and no real characters/leveling etc.

Wizardry let you not only create a character, but a party!!! Not only that, they could level up, advance, and change class, leveling was basically infinite.

Spells...were......mysterious. You did not know what they did, you had to learn them, and cast them and find out lol. There was no internet, magazines etc, so it was just you figuring it all out (although somehow the Identify 9 bug got around really well lol).

The game was amazing, and honestly still is. It's mostly text with very simple graphics (lines) but it got the job done well. It introduced me to how great RPGs could be on a computer or game system, and they have been my favorite ever since (alttough eventually I started liking action rpgs more as I became less patient, I still do love dungeon crawlers).

That was my first game of that type, and probably the one that made the biggest impact on me for the rest of my life. Other games from other generes were AMAZING and insane....so good......but especially for the first game out of the gate of that type.....Wizardry blew them all away. There were some improvements, HUGE jumps later, that were similarly awesome......but for the first game of a type.....this was the pinnacle for me.
