I really don't know what you think Microsoft and Sony are doing so differently. They both have a couple of IP they rely on and they both try the odd new one until they find a hit. If anything Sony have been significantly more successful than Microsoft than this as of late considering they've added The Last of Us, Horizon, Spider-man and Dreams to the repertoire. Microsoft haven't had a hit new IP for over a decade.

And they only had to kill off Sly Cooper, Jax & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, LBP, SOCOM, Twisted Metal, and a few other IPs in the process. People can bitch about this gen's Halo and Gears entries all they want, but the reviews hold up, even if 10/10s aren't thown around as often as PS4 games. Forza remains the superior choice to Gran Turismo for the past decade and one-shot exclusives like Sunset Overdrive and Re:Core have been hits critically.

Sony literally haven't said anything about the PS5 other than some spec details, a logo and that they're waiting on the competition before announcing price. Like do you think Microsoft doesn't care what Sony prices the PS5?

Sony's waiting for Microsoft to reveal its entire hand so they can go "well they're offering all of this for THAT price, but we're offering all of this for a LESSER price!"

Only problem is that Microsoft hasn't revealed the price tag or all the potential models yet and that scares them. If they go too high they risk losing sales to the cheaper rumored Series "S" model, but if they go too low then they're gonna be bleeding profit, especially with the newer hardware in both.

They want to repeat the PS4 launch and they're pissed that Xbox isn't making the same mistakes while revealing their system early.

I can't tell what you're saying here. Are you upset that Sony isn't continuing to make games in the same series for a decade+ and created new IPs instead?

You brought up Jak and Daxter, but Naughty Dog stopped making Crash Bandicoot games to do those, and the IP that followed was Uncharted. Ratchet and Clank got a movie and game just a few years ago. Others like SOCOM and Twisted Metal were just getting less and less well received. There's a reason to move on from IPs. Sticking with the same thing over and over again gets stale.

The "free" games though Microsoft started that with Xbox Live. Plus you get 4 free games a month with Xbox compared to the 2 free games with Playstation.

PS+ free games started in 2010 for the PS3. Games with gold started in 2013.

For the topic overall though, Sony's innovations have been mostly in previous generations:
  • PS1: CD audio, dual analog, hardware refreshes (PSone)
  • PS2: DVD drive, backward compatibility, Eyetoy, other gimmicks like Singstar
  • PS3: Blu ray drive, free games with PS+, cross buy, remote play for PSP/Vita
  • PS4: VR on console I guess? PS Now/Vue is about the only other thing they did first.
