Gen 5 had the best chance of getting in from the main generation games of this decade. Gen 6 to 8 are the ones that are seen as being more of a disappointment among Pokemon fans, many of whom praise Gen 5 due to being the last generation before the disappointing 3DS era.

Gen 4 was crapped on a shitton for the engine slowness. It didn't get as visceral of hate as 3 and 5 but it was definitely there. HGSS mostly escaped it though.

I know how the Pokemon fanbase works. At least since the start of Gen 3, they will criticize the most recent generation at the time. Due to the amount of criticism for the most recent generation, you have very few people willing to praise it due to the risk of getting into arguments with other people who hate the most recent generation. Once the next generation comes out, the fanbase turns their attention to criticizing the newest generation, so the previous generation that was being criticized in the past can be looked back on more positively with far less risk of having other people getting into arguments (as they're busy criticizing the newest generation).

SwSh makes SM look absolutely fantastic. I like them fine. XY is completely by the numbers though once you get past the whole "omg 3d Pokemon" thing

Gen 5 is the franchise's peak I reckon. It's a step ahead of everything apart from the original.

Though ORAS may be the, uh, "most Pokemon" game of all. Don't know how else to describe it.

I think I probably enjoyed SM a little bit more playing through it once, though trials kinda sucked, but I basically have no desire to play it again. SwSh's story was weaker, though I definitely loved the presentation more, and I'm still playing it with raids and the like.

People are fickle as fuck. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker, FF 9 and 10, and SM Sunshine were all pretty heavily mixed/disliked and eventually became beloved.

I firmly believe Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver is not only the best Pokemon game, but one of the crowning moments of the entire medium. I'm ecstatic to see it get this kind of love.

Pokemon Black/White is also very good and would've been nice to see in the bracket, but I'll live without it.

I was never a D/P/P fan, but there's a lot of people who see Platinum as the gold standard of the series for whatever reason.

HG/SS are near-perfect examples of how to do remakes. They took what's great about the original G/S, what's great about Platinum, and then added a bunch of other things on top of all that and the result is amazing. My only 2 criticisms are:

1. Kris > Lyra
2. The level curve is still wonky. It's better than Gen 2 overall but they could've done more to fix it.

Gen 5 has been polarizing as fuck from day one. I liked it a lot, and there's a ton of people that think it's the best Pokemon has ever been. But there's a bunch of people who took extreme offense at all of the Gen 1 expies in the Gen 5 roster and some other seemingly minor issues with the gen and won't shut up about them.

X/Y was where the series started going downhill. But the game was a big deal in a good way at the time: Pokemon is finally 3D and they finally streamlined all of the multiplayer functionality into one screen! If the series had rebounded after that, I would've been glad to just write off X/Y as growing pains.

OR/AS were good, but not as good as they should have been. Like HG/SS, it was a combination of a lot of what's great about R/S and what's great about X/Y along with some of its own flavor. The problem is that they ignored Emerald when it came to features. But when it came to text references Gamefreak was happy to remind us of all of the Emerald features and a few R/S features which were cut. I think the end result is still good, but it lacked the heart and soul that... Heart and Soul had.

Then Pokemon Go happened. It's not this site's sort of game, but it was a big deal and I'm kinda surprised that it didn't make the bracket.

Sun/Moon is where the series really started tanking. It didn't learn from X/Y's mistakes and it screwed up one of X/Y's biggest selling points (streamlined multiplayer). Even then, I still wouldn't call Sun/Moon bad. Gamefreak at least tried with the new Pokemon and characters.

Ultra Su/Mo was a lazy rehash of SuMo a year later, and that's where I really started to stop caring about the newer main series game.

And then Let's Go was an abomination.

Sword/Shield were okay in some regards, but they inherited some of Let's Go bad decisions and added DLC greediness and the end result... isn't good. At the time of release I kinda liked Gen 8, but the more I think about it they might be 2nd only to Let's Go and maybe Diamond/Pearl in terms of suckiness. The whole package isn't worth the few good parts.

Pokemon Go had a lot of issues that probably lost it players early on. That game was actual trash if you lived in the country since you could never find anything that wasnt the same 3-4 Pokemon
