https://nypost.com/2020/03/01/new-yorkers-rankled-on-first-day-of-statewide-plastic-bag-ban/

New Yorkers were forced to begin grappling with a new shopping reality Sunday as the states ban on plastic shopping bags kicked in and not many people were happy about it. I think its ridiculous, letter-carrier Scott Kimmel, 56, said while shopping at the Whitestone Target in College Point, Queens. I understand about conserve, take care of the environment, but cmon! About half the shoppers seen by The Post on the first day of the bag ban, including Kimmel, were compensating by bringing their own bags from home, while another quarter opted to just go bagless rather than pay the 5-cent paper-bag fee allowed under the law, and the remaining 25 percent coughed up the nickel charge per bag. I was totally shocked, Target shopper Richie Alvarez, 49, said of the move. This is what our world is coming to. Yeah, they charged me extra for the bag. Thats why I only took one. It would normally be two or three bags. The law, passed by state lawmakers last year, bars single-use plastic bags at any retailer from supermarkets to bodegas that collects sales tax at their store. It allows shoppers to bring bags from home, buy a reusable bag at the store, or pay the 5-cent fee for paper bags.

Although it went into effect Sunday, state officials said they wont bring the hammer down on retailers who ignore the law until April, when fines could start to kick in. People dont want to hear this, said the manager of C-Town Supermarket on Manhattans Lower East Side, who only identified himself as Henry. Theyre not happy. At least I have a month to break them in. Were trying to get cheap mesh bags for them. Well see. Smaller retailers, including the Food Bazaar Supermarket in Woodside, opted to ease into the new world of plastic-less retail by pushing their remaining supply before tapping new stacks of brown paper bags. This is it! the stores manager said. We have enough for one, maybe two days. These are the last, then no more. You cant order, no one has more. At the Bay Ridge Stop & Shop in Brooklyn, some shoppers were so ticked off that they blindly lashed out Mayor Bill de Blasio, who supports the ban but in reality did not pass it the state did. This is nonsense, said Constance Tripoli, 53. I aint got no SUV like the mayor to take my groceries home. I told them I needed bags, and they snuck me a few.

It's been 2-3 years since I've used a plastic bag. Re-usable cloth bags, cardboard boxes, and a duffel bag work just fine for me if I absolutely need one.

Yea its funny when people see this happening in a new state and get mad lol. We did it here at any grocery store or a store that sells food (like Target) and its been fine. Reusable bags work perfectly. But I use them for trash bags!...oh well. Guess youll have to spend 2 bucks on a roll of garbage bags. Oh no.

Minneapolis does this. You can still get a plastic bag, but you have to pay for them now. 5 cents a piece, but still. And no straws usually.

I was joking.

I'll probably use my day pack the most, which ironically I bought at Macy's in Manhatten.
I've been using that for a while anyway.

I am hoping to get panniers for my bike at some point.

There have been times when I thought the cashier was paid by the amount of bags they give out.
I'm sure there are a ton of pain in the ass people out there.

But if I'm buying canned soup and hand soap, I am not worried about the hand soap infiltrating the can.

As a tree hugger, I do agree.
The amount of material in a plastic bag is minimal compared to the rest of the plastic in our environment.
As, say, any plastic bottle. I do realize bags blow in the wind better, but still. It feels like the pendulum swinging too far the other way. And the $.5 cost of a bag is nothing but a regressive tax. I honestly want to know where that money is going.

I thought the ostensible point was to cut down on plastic waste, not merely force the consumer to purchase it.

I've always reused the bags for many purposes.

Ya, I am completely Aldis curious.
I've never been but there is one close to a friend's house.
I was ignorant of their brand. I thought it was a small market type grocery store. Like a Tops.
I didn't realize their German roots and the many EU compliant products.

Ya, I want to check it out. It's basically across the street from my friend's place.
I'm actually kinda pissed there isn't one close to me, as there is a perfect place for it.
But the main Grocery store seems to have an unspoken stranglehold on my town.
They have basically no real competition. I'm positive there is a political reason for that.

on the reason why they banned the plastic bags in the first place.... it's not because of the ocean problem. when they do the garbage processing. the bags get caught somehow and workers have to work the machine to untangle em (takes alot of time).

not sure if this is the reason for NY's problem but this is why Oregon got rid of them.
