Yeah US response is equally as shit.

Our pandemic response was literally cut last year, there aren't enough tests, and treatment isn't free so less people are going to go to the doctor. Expect a train wreck.

Some think they have a larger population of older folks with poor health and then perhaps a different strain of the virus. Thing is about the good ol USofA we have plenty of folks not even in that upper age bracket that are in poor health and many of those are from bad lifestyle habits.

In Wuhan, the original center of infection, 80,000 were infected of a population of 11 million. That's 0.7%. Of that, 70,000 have recovered, 3000 died.

In comparison, the CDC estimates 5-20% of the US population contracts flu yearly, with 200,000 hospitalizations and 12-18,000 deaths.

Last I saw (which was, admittedly, about a week ago, so it may be out of date now) there are precisely zero cases that have been sourced to someone immigrating, legally or otherwise.

Border security would have done shit to stop this. Better testing would have stopped this, or at least helped mitigate the spread. A bit late for that now, though, because this isn't "a foreign disease" (whatever that means) anymore - it's spread, and the main form of transmission will now be from within the community, not from travellers or foreigners.

Um, there is a 42% death rate right now in italy (between people who recover or died). Of people who have contacted it, almost 10% have died (and 9% more are in serious or critical condition).

That is over a 15% rate of people who either are dead, or could potentially die in Italy.

The current theory is that it is mutating and getting worse (hence why the numbers in Italy are so much greater).

It also is spread far easier then the flu, and the estimate for number of americans who will contract it are extremely high.

There is absolutely no comparison to what is happening in Italy to a normal year of the flu.

Best bet is for everyone to avoid contact with other people as much as possible, and hope you don't get it. People like me with health conditions are the most at risk by far.

21,000 out of a population of 60 million. .03%. 16,000 mild infection, 1500 serious, 2000 recovered, 1500 deaths.

Makes me curious about what makes Italy different from France, with a shared border, common climate and geography, similar population and culture? France: 4500 infections of 67 million population, .0067%, 91 deaths.

Coronavirus in US: 2500 infected of a population of 330 million, .00075%, 51 deaths. Also curious about what makes Washington State and New York different from the rest of the United States, those two states accounting for half the US infections.

You are missing my point though. Say a disease starts spreading in Mexico. It's probably best not to have a completely unsecured Mexican border where people are just flooding in.

What if we manage to control the disease here but then it starts spreading in Mexico?

Older populations are more vulnerable to the disease that's known for killing the old. Fancy that.

Japan would get ravaged too since they have so many old people. But their xenophobia driven super exclusive immigration program is protecting them from it.

And Florida's infamous The Villages..... if Coronavirus broke out there America's death toll would ramp up real fast.
