When it comes to general response, especially the social distancing and self quarantining:
Huge underreaction

When it comes to panic buying all the essential food and other items from the fucking grocery store before the sane people who don't stock six god damned months worth of shit can go out to buy things only to be greeted with empty shelves:
Massive hyper super fucking overreaction!

(I especially love the instances of people getting into physical altercations for items....yeah...come into direct contact and infect each other so you can get another package of TP in your cart....morons!)

It's hard to gauge because the 2 sides don't balance each other out. The people acting all hysterical and buying up everything in sight are idiots, but the people who say it's nothing to worry about are equally as bad.

I think it should be approached with optimistic caution. As I'm young and fairly healthy, I'm not overly concerned, but my parents are pretty much the ideal candidates for getting wrecked by it so I'm more vigilante for their sakes.

Western countries (with their quarantines and country-wide lockdowns): big, BIG overreaction

Asian countries (subsidize the production of tests, quarantine those who test positive): appropriate reaction

There are ways to handle this calmly and reasonably, and many of the precautions we are taking now are due to the fact that so many idiots are not willing to do simple things to ensure the safety of others.

Most things could remain open, most people could continue to work, just the elderly or previously sick need to be protected. It should be easy for them to get food, safely, probably through delivery. They should stay home and self quarenteen, and if you have diabetes/high blood pressure/cancer/lung problems you should be required to stay home and given $2000 a month from the government for now to help you pay your bills.

A vast majority of Americans would then be able to live their lives normally. Social distancing should still be in effect mind you, but it would be most important for people who are in contact with the elderly and or sick, at home or where they work. Testing of people working with the elderly to ensure they don't have it etc, would also prevent most outbreaks in such areas.

This situation, the way many places are handling it, closing down all schools, all retail etc, is only needed because too many people were continuing to party, go to bars etc. It's an over-reaction but only because so many people are irresponsible and seem not to care about the welfare of others who are in much greater danger.

The sad thing is this is not a long term viable solution, you can't lock everyone down for months, and some predicitions say this could last for 18 months or so before it plays out. You can't hhve everyone stay at home and give them $1-2K a month for all that time (that would like quadripple our deficiet).

No real easy solutton at this point tbh, not sure what the next steps will be.

Pretty much this. Collectively, people aren't paying enough attention to measures that will actually help keep the virus under control, but the hysterical panic buying is a hideous overreaction.

Also, it's worth noting that it's much better in a situation like this to overreact sensibly (i.e. in terms of isolation measures, not the panic buying) than to underreact. Overreact, and you're inconvenienced for a month or two but then everything goes back to normal. Underreact, and there's nothing you can do to stop the juggernaut that is a highly contagious viral infection, resulting in many, many deaths that could have been prevented.

Clearly it wasnt enough of a reaction when it first started, and we made it worse for not treating it as a priority.

So now we have to act 10x as harsh to fix the mistakes we made when we ignored it before.

so it basically went from one end of the spectrum to the complete opposite

I was honestly expecting the political reactions and policies to be enforced MAYBE a week later than it happened, but it's pretty much what I expected.

I'd say that the only overreacting part are the idiots buying shit in bulk.

China locked everything down and Japan has been taking an approach approach similar to Western nations, which throws your racist narrative out the window. And the nations that did try to do something more subdued have been pretty seriously impacted, as we saw with Italy.

That is one nice thing about an authoritative government able to enact swift, draconian measures to fight a disease, I suppose.

But yeah. Its tending to be a mix of both over and under reacting. Panic buying and hoarding are generally causing some problems, as others noted. The response early on has been too slow.

At the end of the day though, its a disease with fairly easy transmission, but which also has a fatality rate over at LEAST 0.1% for all age groups (reaching well above 1% for middle-aged and older people, up to almost 5% for some of the most elderly). So some level of reaction is frankly justified. The %s for the younger age groups is fairly high for this virus relative to most.

I think people need to calm down a little. They are getting to worked up and panicking. And thats only going to make things worse. Like, its a pretty bad situation for a lot of people. But panic buying is hurting everyone. And collectively freaking out and extra fear mongering doesnt help. People should calm down some, take extra precautions, dont panic buy, and just live life the best you can during the world quarantine...
