2) Character whose only trait is their orientation/skin color/gender

Going to the CW well, Anissa Pierce is the daughter of Black Lightning. She has a strong sense of social justice to the point that her sister nicknamed of "Harriet Tubman" because she's constantly getting involved with protests, demonstrations, and similar movements. She later comes into conflict with her father because her sense of justice leads her to, in his opinion, misusing her newly discovered superpowers by robbing criminals and donating the money.

Curtis Holt is a tech whiz. He makes goofy jokes and is gay. And that's pretty much his entire character profile in a nutshell.

The point CM_Ponch is making has merit, but it's very often used just to complain about a character being gay in general. Look how people bitched about Ellie being gay in the Last of Us sequel.

Suddenly making established characters gay does sound more like attempts at inclusion, rather than legitimate character development. I mean, making someone gay just so you can say, "We're progressive, we have gay characters!" seems, insulting(?) to gay people. That they are exploiting their sexuality almost.

If you want to make established characters gay, you can't just flip a switch and make it so, have a story arc. Make it a natural progression of their character, instead of what some interpret to be an attempt to cash in on diversity.

The issue is that I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. Anissa is a complex character with her own goals and motivations. It was blatantly obvious that Curtis was kept around solely to be the token gay dude. For the last two or three seasons of Arrow, the rare time he had a storyline it was always about his husband or boyfriend. He did nothing in the show except make terrible jokes and be gay.

You are right about his character. Mister Terrific is the 3rd smartest human in the DC world. He is made in to a punching bag who was not even the smartest person them arrow. At least they used a different first time so I can just say it is his silly cousin.

I for one welcome shallow gay characters. Because lord knows there are millions of shallow straight ones. Not every gay character has to be some deep, complicated character study

Don't see why people make a big deal about gay characters, badly or well written, either way. There are tons of gimmick characters as is, but the gays get singled out when they do it.

If a writer creates a new character who is LGBT, theres nothing wrong with that. Changing a classic character in any way is going to piss people off, so the comparison isnt really accurate.
