Just started playing this and had my heart set on naming my island Crocodile Isle as a DKC 2 tribute, but character limit strikes again. Goddammit. Time to spend an hour mulling over names!

Pro tip on rocks: stand diagonal to the rock and dig holes on the two outer sides of your position relative to the rock to box yourself in. You can apparently hit the rock up to eight times (I've only managed seven) if you're quick enough.

So does anyone know the list of fish and bugs that are vanishing after March? Presumably it'd be roughly the same for things that were in New Leaf, but I dunno if there are any rare critters new to this game that'll be gone soon. There's a topic on the game board, but the lists seem confused based on hemispheres.

I spent a couple of hours expressly trying to gather stuff today but it seemed like I just got a ton of the same stuff. Ended up barely scratching the 15 to get construction started. Guess I don't mind it terribly since I've always thought AC should be a slow and steady game, but I'm still curious.

I've got 30 of fish alone, then 25 bugs right now

A couple I found at other places like mystery island tours (Stringfish & Cherry Salmon, though I got the latter again in my town afterward) and friends towns (Peacock Butterfly at icon's)

For fish you just gotta be trying out the different types of locations - rivers, waterfalls, upperlevels, oceans, and ponds (though I've yet to find a waterfall fish, if they still exist). Coelacanth hunting in the rain.

For bugs, helps knowing special conditions that bring them - mole crickets are underground if you hear their chirping, some bugs are on treestumps so you should keep some cut, keep your eyes out for bugs on flowers, snails appearing commonly in the rain.... shake trees and some bugs may come down, or pillbugs/caterpillars popping out of stones...

Also playing both day and night for different times of critters coming out....

I forget / didn/t notice my first sturgeon, by my last couple were at the mouth of the river meeting the ocean.... checking the app yeah it says River (Mouth). All day catch.

Stringfish is River (Clifftop), 4pm-9am. Like I mention I caught mine on a tour, and it was on the 2nd level so it doesn't need to be right at the top

Time/location/weather differences are very important. Location especially for fish, there are a surprising amount of different zones in the rivers.

But the biggest thing for me personally is that I have a Southern Hemisphere island which is on the summer -> fall transition and my partner like most people has a Northern Hemisphere one so I can get different things from her island. But at any rate the trick is to visit people with different conditions than your personal island.

I don't think I want to go to a southern hemisphere town to catch more stuff. Then the museum really would fill up too fast and leave almost nothing to look forward to in new months. I almost don't even want to dig up the fossils on mystery tours, lol.
