Honestly, the only movie anybody's named that I remember well enough to rank that I actually think is a "bad" movie is eXistenZ (1999). Everything else I've ranked is at least above average, guys. So even if something is low doesn't mean I think it's bad. It's also my subjective ranking, not my objective rankings.

I just wish the first half of it wasn't so damn slow. Like, practically nothing happens for the first 40 minutes.

I think Eli Roth gets shit on too much unnecessarily. He's a very competent director and writer. Green Inferno was a gorgeous film, tbh. He's just immature, and his lame potty humor kind of works against most of his films. You can tell he's kind of a doucher. But I love Knock Knock -- and Green Inferno, Cabin Fever, and Hostel are all solid 6 or 7/10 films.

Green Inferno's the only one of his I've actually seen, I need to check out Hostel especially, and also Cabin Fever.

Cinematography wise, I agree, The Green Inferno was beautiful, and there were some interesting ideas there. Like, the idea of uninformed, blind activism being just as harmful as not doing anything? That's a really clever idea for a horror film. I just don't think he executed it well. He seems like the kind of guy who's better at coming up with a general cool idea than actually executing it to its full potential.

But again, I've only seen one of his films, so, grain of salt, etc.

I agree, honestly. That's partially what I meant about him being a good writer, but immature -- I guess. He has/had good ideas, but there are too many holes, not enough maturity/refinement, and tons of corny dick and fart jokes. Some people mistake him taking influence as him stealing ideas, too. Green Inferno's name is an homage to Cannibal Holocaust -- but its characters/themes aren't similar. Knock Knock is also very similar to an older grindhouse film - but it's definitely modernized, has a more horror tone. and uses Keanu to play up tons of laughs.

Horror is one of those genres that by its nature is gonna have a lot of overlap, so for me I tend to look at horror films less under the lens of originality (Although when there is something original, that's great), and more under the lens of how it was executed, so I don't mind if Roth took stuff from other films necessarily, just use them well if that's what you're gonna do, lol.

I do wanna check out more of his work. I think more than anything, I was disappointed with how not shocking The Green Inferno was. Everyone acted like it and other Roth films were just the most disgusting, fucked up things ever, and outside of one or two scenes, it really wasn't very gory or fucked up IMO. Maybe I'm just desensitized at this point, but really the only scene that even remotely seemed "fucked up" by horror movie standards was when the fat guy got eaten, but even then it was handled pretty goofy and wasn't as impactful as it could have been.

Also "Oh no, they've got the munchies!" was one of the dumbest lines I've ever heard, lmao.

I agree that it's a let down for its shock factor. I mainly liked its visuals. The location and makeup were so great. I also liked some of the small details in the film, like the Betty Blue poster (even if it probably had no reason/purpose aside from Roth shouting "look at me, I have good taste!"). But yes - that joke was the worst. There are equally as bad jokes in Cabin Fever, even if Cabin Fever is a slightly more original and memorable film.
