Range Life is still my fave song. The Magnetic Fields have a ton of good stuff, though, so that might be my second pick.

The Magnetic Fields > Pavement > Modest Mouse > Sunny Day Real Estate > Guided by Voices > Built to Spill > Wilco > the rest

those first six i listed are practically neck and neck... all incredible bands. Wilcos okay. Hate the other two listed. A pretty good selection for the poll though, Id like to throw in a vote for Sebadoh myself

Sebadoh is awesome. Bake Sale is a great album. I almost threw Dinosaur Jr. on the initial poll too but IMO their 80s output is better than their stretch in the 90s, partially because of Barlow being present on the 80s stuff. Love his bass sound

totally forgot about Slint, I feel like an idiot now. I absolutely love Spiderland.

Since were on this train of thought, I also feel I should mention that I forgot to throw Shellac on there. I wish these polls had more than 10 slots.

Underrated. Have a decent following but I never see them mentioned when discussing 90s indie bands. See Neutral Milk discussed a lot obviously which I'm surprised you didnt include. I guess they became mainstream enough?

Kinda. You can only be so underground popular before you become mainstream popular, although it's very rare that media doesn't catch on, which is the case for NMH.

I mean Colbert did play Holland 1945 to end his show and Brand New basically idolizes them. They never became a radio hit but I think they became THE indie band to be into for a while through word of mouth to where it wasnt as fashionable or mysterious to know about them anymore. They just became so much more popular after they were done. But the funny thing is they reunited when I was at the end of college to tour again when people latched on to them. Tickets to see them were $50 when I was able to see Flogging Molly for $20 at the same venue and Deftones for $60. Take that for what you will.

Aeroplane Under the Sea is still a kickass album

honestly it comes down to my own subjectivity and the limit of 10 poll options. I personally dont like NMH too much so I didnt think to include them in the listing.

I think another problem with including NMH is they only have two albums. Avery Island is okay. Obviously Aeroplane is the shining beacon indie rock holy grail though.

This thread is weird. Usually in these threads I realize bands/albums are older than I thought. I this case, it's backwards.

I was going to mention The Shins, based entirely off of Oh Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow. But both are 2000s.

Same deal with Pinback. I really had myself convinced Pinback were 90s. Nada Surf had two in the 90s but they've gotten better over time.

Not sure who I would consider a favorite of those listed. I've listened to, owned, and seen BJM more than any of them though.

Agreed about Diary being a masterpiece. I listened to that album pretty much every day for a couple of years as a teenager.

I disagree about the other albums though. The Pink Album has the same general feel of the Diary period & some great songs-- Rodeo Jones is one of their absolute best.

How It Feels To Be Something On does have a different sort of atmosphere, but the songs are really strong. The Rising Tide has a few stand outs but is definitely the weakest.

However, all of them feature Jeremy Enigk's great voice & William Goldsmith's awesome drumming, both of which are enough for me to listen to pretty much anything.
