It seems like generic anime shonen #57.

This Tanjiro kid just met the Hashira of the demon slayers and headbutts one of them because of rawr protect loved ones rage.

He even gets the cliche Whoa, this guy that has a fraction of the experience and skill managed to miraculously hit this veteran reaction.

Dont get me started on his never foreshadowed at all flashback powerup as hes going to lose shit he pulled on the spiderweb demon.

Its like, okay. I get it. The demons were humans and had lives and ambitions. It wasnt sad the first time nor do I respect Tanjiro for having compassion. Why do we spend ten minutes flashbacking for each demon?

Nezuko is carrying this show on cuteness alone for me.

This is a bigger disappointment than My Hero Academia.

Because people kept harping about how great it is, and it has a great start imo. Meeting Muzan so early was very cool. But it started to drop off hard once Zenitsu joined the team. And it keeps degrading for me.

Popular = Bad

Hurr durr.

Demon Slayer is THE only manga series to position 10 issues of the manga in the top 10 in Japan AT THE SAME TIME.

It will probably never happen again. That tells you how good it is, and how the opinion of a single person that didn't enjoy it is meaningless when put up against the bigger picture.

It's the manga/anime with the biggest global impact since Naruto almost 20 years ago.

Okay, but why?

You didnt answer my question.

DBZ is one of the most popular and well known anime in history. If not the most. But it obviously isnt actually that enjoyable from a writing perspective compared to other anime.

It has one episode with good animation and execution which made all the casuals run toward it. Anime always boosts manga sales too.

It's just a run of the mill shonen otherwise.

Because of Nezuko.

Are the only answers I have right now.

Whats so cool about this show? The characters arent really that compelling yet. Im hoping they improve since it looks like Inosuke might get some development soon. I think Zenitsu is just a bad character. Tanjiro is boring.

I dunno.

Because you don't read/watch Shounen for the writing. You're in it for memorable characters, quirky relationships, decent fights and overall cool badass moments.

If you want clever writing, switch to stuff like Psychopass, Steins:Gate or Monster.

Everytime I read a complaint about a Shounen Anime that begins with "It seems generic" or "It does nothing new" I think to myself the person saying that is trying too hard to project their views of a different media piece onto it.

The Shounen genre is FORMULAIC. Always was, always will be. There's always a group of friends that battle evil, some of them betray the MC at some point, they form stronger bonds and overcome difficulties.

DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Attack on Titan, all of them have fundamentally the same writing and concept. What changes are the characters, the abilities, the fights pace and the world building.

I haven't ever heard any good things about it either, and the little bit I saw didn't set itsrlf apart from any other shonen. Lol at someone saying it's the most impactful manga/anime since Naruto when One Piece and MHA still exist.

The spider guy had a cool design though

Come back to me when either of those two land 10 issues of the manga in the most selling list at the same time.

Demon Slayer is INSANE in Japan right now.

Literally never seen anything like that since Naruto, this is not me saying it, it's all major Japanese outlets.

Im going to have to disagree hard here.

HunterxHunger is a popular shonen that does not focus on fights.

And the shows you listed are all very different.

Demon Slayer is carried by its animation because the actual fights dont really have much strategy or finesse. Tanjiro does a water move that he pulls out of his ass every single fight.

Naruto has characters using previously established movesets in clever ways.

Attack on Titan builds immense tension and emotional stakes by incorporating death for named characters as well as relying on plot twists left and right.

Demon Slayer relies on random moves and characters saving the day last minute, and the protag being amazing at everything for some reason.

I dont get it.

I had to drop it as well. People were hyping the spider guy fight so much that I had to see it...and I was disappointed. I couldn't stand how much the MC talks to himself. Show don't tell damn it. Also the world building is pretty shit. Demons are as boring as a villain as you can get, and the whole Demon Slayer corp thing isn't well put together at all. It's just so bare bones.

anyway OP I think the answer boils down to the animation and fight scenes, as far as the anime is concerned. otherwise idk, it's generic and kinda dull imo

not explicitly bad and it handles being overly edgy a lot better than most like-minded series do, where they think characters screaming a lot and just killing characters off a lot makes for good writing. Slayer seems to at least lower the unrepentant 14 year old writer edge and manages to have decent fights

It should be noted that I don't think very highly of the Shonen genre in general. I like One Piece & DBZ and enjoy the first part of Naruto a lot and would probably like HxH if i watched the whole thing. MHA was okay from what I watched.
