The objective games of the decade: Skyrim, Dark Souls, Dota 2, Clash of Kings, GTA5, Fortnite, Red Dead Redemption 2, Smash Ultimate, Breath of the Wild, CoD: Black Ops, Witcher 3, Undertale, Bloodborne, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Mario Odyssey, Super Meat Boy, The Last of Us, Doom, Overwatch, Borderlands 2, Shovel Knight, Hearthstone, Stardew Valley, Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11, Horizon Zero Dawn, Hollow Knight, NieR Automata, God of War, and REmake Evil 2.

The answer is whatever you want from that list, but it is absolutely one of those games. And trust me, there are things on there I detest, but the story of gaming this decade cant be told without them.

(Minecraft and League both came out in 2009.)

You need to trim out a whole lot of fat.

Games like Black Ops and Smash, what did they bring new to the table that previous installments didn't, they weren't even breakout hits. It's all about revolutionary, influence, and exceptional quality to me, gotta check off 2 of these boxes. I don't even like half these games but these are the ones that are widely regarded as landmarks(not including mp games)

Probably in this order for me in terms of deserving games:
Minecraft
Zelda BOTW
Dark Souls
Witcher 3
The Last of Us
Skyrim

I feel good about this list and if we exclude Minecraft these are the best top 5 to represent the decade, SEE: metacritic score tally for GOTD. This wasn't intentional by my part, I didn't copy their list. Games like RDR, ME2, Bloodborne, GOW, SMG2 and an indie game like Undertale, HK, SK are all in the B tier. The rest are in a tier of just being really well received games.

I know that Minecraft is massively popular and I agree that it deserves to be here for that reason, but I never understood why people consider it revolutionary and influential. What has it influenced? It doesn't seem like its inspired a lot of imitations or anything and I don't know what gameplay ideas its introduced that other games have adapted. I'm biased because I think that its boring, but I just don't get why its considered such an important game.

Nobody mentioning PUBG? 4th best selling game of all time and played a critical role in popularizing Battle Royale.

Auto Chess deserves special mention as well, since it's basically a genre now and any game that turns into a genre deserves to be on a GotD list.

I kinda cheated for Minecraft but it's the biggest game and it is still played like crazy in 2020 with the crappiest graphics I've ever seen with a budget of 5$ . That speaks volumes to me.

Pretty sure Candy Crush earned more money than any other game this decade. It's bigger than Minecraft or GTA5.

For games in the bracket, Fate/Grand Order has made the most money.

2009 is more like an Alpha version, no one considers that to be the release date.

Rocket League definitely deserves to be on Ulti's list IMO. You could also argue for Cuphead (top-shelf indie with significant cultural impact) or Five Nights at Freddy's (it was fucking EVERYWHERE. For years!).

Angry Birds would totally deserve a spot too, had it not released at the tail end of 2009 on iOS.

Objectivity is dumb. If we're going for pure innovation, games like Ocarina of Time are out of the running for 'Game of the Decade' for the 90's because it can be argued that they aped previous 3D games like Mario 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, and Star Fox 64 and it is simply the most codified, 'best' version of those elements. Going for "the most defining games of the decade", you're gonna get a list of the same handful of innovations (Minecraft, PUBG/Fortnite, Pokemon Go, Candy Crush or Granblue or whatever), Breath of the Wild, whatever the preference between Skyrim, Red Dead, and Witcher is of the individual, Undertale if you had a mostly online presence, and MAYBE a narrative choice like Spec Ops or Automata if you're feeling saucy. If you're not into fighters, I doubt that Killer Instinct or Smash Ultimate are gonna appear on your list, no matter how much Killer Instinct perfected online netcode or how Smash created an incredibly balanced, celebratory roster and also Little Mac. Or what Tropical Freeze, Rayman, and Celeste did with silent environmental storytelling in platformers (well, less 'silent' and more 'occasionally obtrusive' with Celeste, but still).

Lots of games are good at lots of things, some just resonate with more people than others. Shut up and vote for the video game you like (even if your opinion's bad and you like Mortal Kombat 11) because that's your Game of the Decade. Anything else is self-imagined elitism or a shared delusion of knowing what's "best" with others.

Plus Kirby Planet Robobot isn't even up for voting so, y'know, whatever.

hm..there is a pretty big distinction to make when coming up with these best of decade lists.

a game like five nights at freddy's is a prime example of this...it was massively popular indeed..but its not really used as a point of reference in quality for anything in the industry as a whole. in fact most fans of horror games look at it with disdain.

on the opposite end of the spectrum you'd have something like, say... Persona 5, which, while not nearly as popular, IS generally seen as the current benchmark for a whole genre of gaming (turn based rpgs).

in my opinion the later category is more deserving, but i can see why people would put popularity first.

i guess it might be sort of like a hardcore movie critic vs general cinema audiences opinion thing.

Yeah, I'd far rather have quality over popularity. Popularity doesn't necessarily mean a game is high quality. More recently that just means it has some sort of multiplayer or competitive aspect to it (or some sort of gambling/loot box/gacha mechanics) or is highly accessible.

Lol imagine if Pokemon GO had released just before COVID-19 hit, what a flop it would be. Or maybe ppl wouldn't have given a damn and made the pandemic worse just to catch them all.

The way I see it is, put all the contenders in one big poll. Which ones garner at least, lets say 3%, of the total votes? Those are your "objective" best games of the decade.

It's not an attempt to alienate or invalidate anyone's opinion. I bet you could find 1 person out there who legitimately thinks nearly every game released in the past 10 years was their Game of the Decade.

"Objective" is trying to get at the larger picture of cultural impact. It's why Mario 64 is beloved and objectively a GotD 90s, while Banjo-Kazooie isn't (even though it's a better game ;) )

I don't feel MM resonates with these "objective" definitions. What did it redefine? Benchmark of what? It wasn't that popular either, or broke sales numbers.

However it's a great game and I don't mind it won.

Eh, not so sure about that. P4G had brackets this round. GTAV will have brackets next round, and we saw what brackets did for GTA today. B8 will always vote its bracket first if it's close.

BotW deserves Game of the Decade for the sole fact that a shitty game with weapon durability mechanics managed to fool so many people into putting it on their personal lists

I legitimately dont understand people who dislike botw because of weapon durability.

You literally have to throw away weapons to pick up better ones in that game because the game just gives them to you all the time.

the weapon durability is there as an additional little push to incentivise you to be creative with how you tackle the game. BotW created one of the most interactive open worlds ever. it doesn't want you to spend the whole game swinging a sword and dodging to the left when necessary

Botw has glaring flaws.

but its one of the best games of last decade

I can see it because a lot of people are very simple and will get turned off by things that go against their sensibilities without thinking about how it fits into the larger scheme.
