I've been looking around for somewhere cheap to move to in WA, and just rent a studio apartment. I will eventually
be living on about $1000 a month (i'm renting a room and doing that now) but I don't want to live the rest of my life renting a room.

I looked all over WA and it's almost impossible to find a studio apartment right now for less than $800, and then you add utilities + internet (internet is not an option) on that, and yeah.

It's gotten so out of control, I'm not sure how anyone who is retired etc can actual rent a place of their own, without significant savings. It is cheaper in other states of course, but...that requires a long move, and redoing health care etc. I might not have an option long term. Some form of rent control or help for the elderly with rent payments (just for the smallest apartments) is really going to be needed in the next decade for sure.

Minimum wage in Washington is 12 dollars an hour x 40 hours x 4 is about $1600 a month. If you're working less than 40 hours a week of course it's going to be hard to afford an apartment by yourself

Actually it's 13.50 now I believe, but many people who are retired or disabled etc, receive only $1000 a month. That is what I will be getting once my eyesight is too bad to work for instance.

Many jobs dont' give full 40 hours though and because min wage has increased in just a few years from $10 to 13.50, alot of jobs that WERE not min wage jobs, now are. Which means alot of people have absically that $1600 you mentioned above as their gross income, but they actually have to pay taxes (at least not state, but we have 11% sales taxes here).

Just SS tax etc, + normal fed tax unless you declare yourself exempt is 15%. So that $1600, becomes more like $1400 total (and that is for quite a large number of jobs, not just fast food jobs, grocery store jobs, gas station jobs, hotel jobs, security guard jobs, retail jobs etc etc).

So basically all those people making $1500 or less (basically anyone making $15 or less an hour in Wa) can't afford to rent their own apartment, since it's general at least $1000 just for that.

You can do it renting a room, but should you be forced to rent a room just to survive, while most jobs you can get only pay the same amount, and that is if your lucky enough to still be healthy so you can actually work, or young enough to work etc.

The $1600 was after taxes actually but yeah I get where you're coming from. My post wasn't meant to be negative I'm just saying you could easily afford a studio with a 40 hour a week minimum wage job.

$800 a month for rent is daunting but speaking from experience don't let it intimidate you if you're seriously about living by yourself in a big city

Yes I know that there are many people ice will detain but when have you seen them ask an asian or african american for their papers. Yeah, I think long term I just am going to have to find a way to make a studio apartment work. I am going to try and find one for $700 or so, that way if the cost goes up over time, It'll still hopefully stay around $800 on average for the next 10 years or so (hopefully).

Then I will use my savings to suppliment my $1000 a month, and see if there are some things I can do (like babysitting/being a nanny etc) that can also help earn money. I won't be able to read much (currently have to use a huge 4k TV to do so) but I should still be able to do some jobs that don't require driving etc.

I'm fine for now living on under 1k a month due to renting a room (for $575 a month), but.....With a base of even $700 + utilities and internet, even if I ditch my car insurance (and cars), I'll still have cell phone bills etc, that is going to bring my base cost per month (before food) to about $900.

I could......survive on $100 a month for food, but yeah, it wouldn't be much fun. So supplimental income is going to be needed. I do have savings that will help as well, but I hate the idea of using them for every day living expenses, so hopefulll there will be some jobs I can still do to make up the rest. I'd personlly likk at least $100 a week to spend on food, which means a minimum of $1300 a month probably total to break even.

Well if you're trying to catch fish, you generally cast your line in water, not sand. Sure, there's fish at the pet store, and the grocery store, and the aquarium, but you don't see many anglers there for a reason.

Really doesn't matter, my family fly to Scotland from London.

People tend to avoid travelling long distance if they can help it. We don't have significant amounts of Mexican immigrants in England because it's a lot easier to move a few miles north.
