This. Having their dev studios turn their franchises into hollow, cynical cash cows may harm customers' support of those franchises in the long term, but in the short term it's highly profitable. And once they've wrung a studio dry, they can just shutter them, lay off their employees, acquire another developer and start the process anew.

My point is that they would make more money if they cut their shit; the titles where they inject their will the heaviest always end up selling the worst, and kill off franchises that could have had a long, profitable life.
