90s?

My health insurance was trying to force me to go on disability. I just finally got done getting them to close the case.

In the process though the lady mentioned I had recieved benefits as a child. This made me slightly angry (well more than slightly).

I know my mother got free rent, and I knew she got more money for having children, but I did not realize the money she got counted as direct benefits for me. She did not spend that money on us, and in fact my brother was put in the system when I was 11 and he was 9.

She continued to claim him though and was able to keep her free apartment (which she kicked me out of when I turned 16) until he reached age 21 I think it was (even though hh didn't live with her at all after he was 9).

I was always unhappy about that of course lol, and knew she got money for us, but I didn't realize it actually counted as benefits for us individually till now. I didn't think to ask the lady on the phone more about it at the time as I was struggling with them to close my case even though I'm mostly blind and have a bunch of medical issues. I told her I didn't want to take benifits from the gov and that is when she mentioned I had already recieved them as a child.

GRRRR.

Anyway, does anyone know how much they would have been? I wonder how long she recieved them for as well. I lived on rooftops for a year from 16-17 till I could join the Air force, and she was not only getting a free place to stay all that time, but money meant direclty for me:(

This would have been around 1986, but obviously going back probably till when I was born.

She passed away almost 10 years ago now, so I guess it doesn't matter too much, but I would be interested to learn how much she recieved. My brother was also homeless much of the time until he was 21 (or whatever the age is that she stopped getting the free apartment), I actually helped her move out of it because she had nobody else to help her. He ended up dying at age 40 about 8 years ago (also from a heart attack, all my family does...I'm actually the longest living immediate family member at this point).

I tried lookiig the info up but can just find tons of stuff about receiving benefits based on your childrens income etc.

I qualify for social security at 60 lol, but there is pretty much no way I'' gonna last 10 more years. I'm ok with getting that because I freaking paid into it for so long. Disability while I can still do ANYTHING seems wrong to me. I may not be able to read to teach, but I am looking for maybe a live in nanny situation where I cook/clean and take care of children, tutor/teach them etc in exchange for room and board long term.

That seems WAY better to me then just sitting at home trying to pass the time while I receive checks from the government.
