Reminds me of that one The Far Side two-page extra with the city of cows.

There are wood people and they'll take over. There are also remote tribes around the world that likely won't get hit by whatever it is that also doesn't destroy other life.

Easily wolves.

Wild pigs have a shot too.

But both grow so exponentially in numbers they could easily starve themselves by over exhausting their ecosystems.

Controversial pick but fucking Octopi, man. Getting to the top of heap isn't about having the sharpest claws or toughest fur. Its brains, and octopi are scary smart. It might take them some time to evolve to live on land but they'd pull it off eventually.

Doubtful since the maximum life expectancy for them is like 4-5 years. And they die not long after mating.

The apex predators would stay the same though as they aren't dependent on humans. We aren't even technically apex predators are we? We are our own weird thing since we aren't really in any natural food chain.

If you meant apex animal that could reach our levels? Then it would automatically be a primate and after that? It would have to be an apex predator or highly intelligent animal that also lives in social groups with fairly long life spans.

So lions, wolves, orcas, dolphins, crab people, elephants, wild pigs, etc...

I know they're super smart for an invertebrate but as far as mammals go are they anywhere near a chimp or elephant? I struggle to believe that. Still a really fascinating animal though

Yeah they are up there. They have been shown to have the ability to solve complex and novel problems. Plus they are able to use tools which puts them at least in the conversation.

Plus rats are survivors true, but dominant species? That's another thing entirely no?

But they wouldn't suddenly just start doing a solo run, so I don't know what 1v1 has to do with this. But you're right, since bears know judo
