Hymn's the sorta rhythm game song I enjoy quite a bit, but it feels like it's missing an element to make it great for me. I do like it at least. I had to listen to AI twice, because I forgot what it was sounded like immediately after I finished listening to it... I don't hate it, it just leaves no impression.

Yet another excellent day of music! Days like these are why I participate in VGMC. Desire Below Flow, like Lost in the Waves, is so quirky in a way I love. Sounds like panic at the start, but as the subdivisions transition from sixteenths to triplets, it becomes beautiful... man, love the harmonies, love the Lost in Thoughts use. Then comes my favorite part at 0:95.... swung 7ths/9ths, OH YES. Then add the relaxed triplets on bells, what a COOL rhythmic trick to utilize. Add the continuous fast triplets on top, and the sum of it is is simply one-of-a-kind. What a way to combine suspense with beauty. Unfortunately, I'm expecting Scrap I/O to win comfortably.

I always think I don't care for Scrap I/O when really it just keeps drawing songs I really like... or maybe I just like it more now that usual, not sure. Lots of cool rhythms and drums to appreciate here even if it kinda drags a little. Sort of mixed on Desire Below but man that intro rips. closer match that I expected.

WOW today's matches are INCREDIBLY GOOD!! Scrap I/O was actually my gateway into the Neotokyo soundtrack in VGMC12 lol, I hadn't even heard of the game before and I'm pretty sure I wasn't too impressed with it Round 1 but I do remember liking it by Round 2. metallic forest ambience beginning very cool and then the HAUNTING PIANO MELODY COMES IN I LOVE THIS PIANO 1:26 instrument is so good and filtered i like that a lot lot too this song is just fuckin crazy cool sounds all around. How I wish I could vote for it in Round 1 this time but oooooooops desire below flow here to block scrap's flow path oh no. The intro is just IMMEDIATELY so cool SCALES AND THEN BREAKING UP AND JUMPING EVERYWHERE what the heck.... and then it busts into the triplet stuff and like whooooaoaoao it suddenly is a lot more "fire emblem sounding" AND THEN 1:00 STARTS and now its a cyberpunk rpg song????? WHAT IS THIS SYNTH this is a very "controlled madness" song, like it sounds everywhere and random but also like all that randomness is meticulously placed to decieve you and that's so cool. great, great song.

from the creators of amazing songs like (ELPIS not EANIE) and (arche not apxn) comes (....HYMN not NUML???? konami pls LALALALA this sure is a PON and wac song all right, although hearing vocals that aren't actually lyrics for a high-level boss song by them is kinda crazy, but I like it. The super reverb farawayness on MarL's voice is really cool, and the way its chopped up in places like 0:34 is too cool, especially layered with the extra reverby chord voices in the back. Very, very dreamy song that still fits all the pop'n weird music tropes that is what makes the sub-sub-subgenre so good. Adventurous Inventors initially makes me think it is going to be very HEAVY GRRRRR ANGRY SONG but then once the intro passes (which is really cool build up) and it goes all techno i am IMMEDIATELY very impressed!! AND THEN IT THROWS VOCALS all this jumping back and forth synth stuff in the calmer section with the vocals is whooooooa. definitely my cup of tea and this is definitely on my radar as something that will grow interest with me, but for now I gotta take NUML

Happy de wa Nai is feeling weird to me today. Usually it's enough to make me feel sad just listening to it, but today has been such a good day for me all things considered that it's not putting me into that space. I can still appreciate it for the multi-layered cool-sounding track it is, but it's weird not having that full resonance.

maid sisters what is this re:zero? opening had me a bit interested, but I really don't like the first real phrase. It feels imbalanced, and not in a way I find interesting. Then everything falls away and I kind of like the chords at 1:10? But it goes on for too long. And we replace it with church organs well okay then. I'm just not feeling anything here.

The Track Informally Known As Hymn sounds like rhythm game music. I wish it were allowed to slow down a bit in places, give some contrast with the fast parts, but instead it just shifts into fast in a different way. Though what transition periods do exist are some of my favorite bits. I feel like I'm wolfing down food here, rather than savoring it. Also vocaloids are cool.

I like where AI's credit roll starts, but I'm less fond of where it goes. In general, I think credit roll tracks aren't well suited for contests like these because they're very much about nostalgia and where you've been over the course of the game proper, with motifs from various points spliced together. This makes them work in context, but makes it harder to enjoy out of context. So I like some bits, especially like the last minute or so with the piano and other instruments on top of it, as simple as that segment is, but there's also long segments that feel very much just there. Close match.

Despair of Elferzia sounds neither like a rhythm game music nor despairing. Well no that's not true it sounds super rhythm gamey listen to that super fast beat; I just like the instrumentation more. It does have slower parts that I feel work better for letting me digest than the slower bits in Hymn do. Or maybe everything I write is BS and I have no idea what I'm talking about this is very possible.

Scrap I/O is my 63rd favorite in the contest! Scrap I/O more like crap I/O actually i like this song but it's one of my least favorite neotokyo songs but neotokyo is one of my faavorite soundtracks so even the ones i rank low I still like more than the vast majority of music : ) the chopped voices always make me happy it feels like when everyone merges into a single being in your nightmare but you're actually just in the corner of the urban bad place with a walkie talkie and you are a skilled hacker which means you can text on a cell phone really fast and are good at speedrunning myst-clones. its hard to pin why this doesn't excite me as much as other fire emblem(neotoky) offerings. i think it is the narrow range the melodic layers explore, only going between a few notes like "demoscene techno music that isn't the songs i like in it". i like neotokyo's minimalism, but this example doesn't execute it in a way that takes me on any journey it just "sounds like cyberpunk so i like it", i like all the 3/16 delay echoes even though they only happen like 2 times but they stick out when they happen. i've commented on loving the way the epiano at 4:36 changes its oscillation rate it sounds like "idm" that's cool this song is TOO LONG it's only 2 minutes long it should be longer like 100 minutes

Desire Below (Flow) is my 9th favorite in the contest! ha ha what a coincidence i was just listening to all of the fire emblem music in smash ultimate over and over again before coming on to vote. I can not decide on a favorite Hiroki Morishita track, this is one of the like 10+ that rank at the top all tied though. certainly one of the most playful morishita offerings, this plays A LOT with triplets vs.16ths, metric modulation, etc. it's kinda like an extension of the "prog part" of monstrosity, but with strangely synthetic instrumentation for this soundtrack. the funny part is you could write this whole thing in 4/4 the whole time if you wanted, it all lines up with the same quarter pulse if you want it to. but I especially like when stuff doesn't align with that, accenting the triplet beats that aren't just 1--4--7--,etc, but more like 1---5---9--- but all in the space formerly represented as groups of 3"this is what 'metric modulation is' why are you being so pedantic (pandemic)" (("THat's not what that word means dear it means when you're excited about tuplets and music puzzles)")) I LOVE THE RHYTHMS IN THIS SONGso yeah of course the rhythms are my kind of thing, more than even much of the stuff I ranked above this in the contest, i like arpeggios, but what i'm really here for is actually not even the overt complexity or synthetic exterior that i think might be where some expect my focus in particular to be. What i'm here for is all the same stuff i'm here for in even the "normal orchestral popular fire emblem awakening song (by morishita (or road taken. that is honorary morishita))", all the casualness of modulation(key changes(Tonal center changes)). it's like the single thing that moves me the most, the same stuff that makes me float in the air when i listen to the Epic Parts of Id~Purpose is what makes this song make me float so high in the air reality breaks and turns into a bunch of crystal spheres inside of a skull in atlantis 3(beyond atlantis2). the shifty chord progressions make me so happy and even though the melody on the glassy sounds are too quiet they're still present enough to be intensely emotional every time they thread together on startling modulation after another. Took me a while to notice this was referencing End of All at some parts, blew my mind when I noticed it!!! So cool!! I have no fucking clue what the context of this in game and i can not imagine this actually fitting with the game but i'm deeply overjoyed that something like this exists in a video game- especially one with as much attention on it as fire emblem. HYMN is my 45th favorite in the contest! if i was not at risk of dying from screaming too loud right now i would do a big timesig rhythm etc analysis but if i did that i would die and that would be sad so instead i will just talk about how much this song makes me miss sam. i miss sam. he would know what to do. too bad sam is incapacitated for his own reasons. i miss you sam. sergio is here now. this track feels like it goes by so much faster than the track length and it's already 2:48 which is a pretty short number, I guess it's filled full of ideas I LOVE weird probably microtonal chords who the fuck cares about music it's so stupid girl in the song is singing fun notes i like them polymeter! Adventurous Inventors [Staff Roll] is my 136th favorite in the contest! i NEVEr remember what this song songs like after I am done listening to it it's like that section of my memory stays erased...so i better get typing so i can know what this song has in it after it's done!! delay echo cool synth sounds it sounds like tron legacy which is not as cool as tron 2.0 or tron 1982 to me but it's still pretty cool. this is pretty trancey. i'm listening to these tracks from bottom to top so this is the 3rd big kick drum dance floor song in a row i am listening to in a row. i am not complaining about that! i like going to be in the rave party even when it is not music i like very much but i like this music so it'd be better than normal. This has some slow string piano music that sounds like "hope from uimineko" genre of music but it's layered ontop of dance music that sounds like "worldenddominator for umineko" genre of music and that contrast's pretty neat feeling. ok the song is done and i don't remember what was in it anymore. I hope i can understand from my text description!

Scrap I/O is a song that keeps coming back. I understand why! It's a good song. I don't mind this returning year after year.

I absolutely adore fast-paced songs, which is why I nominated this. Every time this track comes up in Heroes, I'm like "this track is awesome, where'd it come from again?" And now I remember, as well as why it's so hard to find in Fates' music player--it only plays in a DLC level. And the DLC is honestly the best part about Fates!

HYMN is just this cool thing. So is Adventurous Inventors, honestly. They're both kind of mid-tier songs.

ELFERIA is also kind of a mid-tier song, but it's up against goldenslaughterer so that's an easy vote. Wow, we're in R3 already?

WHOA Scrap is an incredibly cool song, probably my favourite Neotokyo that's been in VGMC sorry Tin Soldiers
I feel like all my favourite credits themes are either "yay the good guys won" (Looking Up at the Sky) or "yay the good guys won but at what cost?" (The Black Song)...this song falls squarely in the latter category with its wonderfully vague sense of finality.
This match is INSANE wtf, two songs that are near-hypnotic with how they pull you in and never let go; Elferia a bit more powerful and repetitive, goldenslaughterer a bit more sinister and structured. I don't think it's turning out as close as expected both for me personally and the votals, but definitely the strongest match I've witnessed in the contest so far!

First match both songs are good! Scrapio is certainly an interesting piece, the voice samples remind me of the southpark stuff giftpia icicle had. There's a lot of variety in this song, but as a result of what it goes for there's stuff I really like and stuff I don't care for, while Desire Below () is pretty solidly stuff I particularly like all the way through! Cool synth sounds there with strong bass in the focus but quick, aquatic flowing synths in the background. Scrapio is a very interesting atmosphere of a piece though and I have a love/hate reaction to the weird voice samples here. But some of the serious-moody-sad piano type moments it has I'm less interested in.

Another song with some what of a controversial name today I guess. I shall call it Hymn, that's easy. For a song with vocals and an instrumentation I don't care for, the actual song part has some pretty cool moments when it really gets going. I'm much more into the instrumentation of Adventurous Inventors. Hm I don't know anything about this game but do all the songs have AI initials because the game is called AI that'd be wild. This song also has vocals but they are more rare about it. Feeling the AI song more here, it's got a lot of good powerful moments too.

toc match, in a weird way I feel like I'm feeling goldenslaughterer higher than usual & Despair of ELFERIA lower than usual, but what this means is that now in my mind they've got roughly equalish rankings so it's another really close match oh no. Still want to give it to DoE though.

I'll be honest, this is the least bad Fire Emblem song that I've heard in this contest. I may even go as far as saying that I don't actually hate it. But it still wasn't enough in this case because the other song is cooler.

What round of TOC is this? I think that goldenslaughterer is one of the entrants that's had the biggest impact on me, since every time it comes up I recognize it and remember how it goes, even though it's still a fairly new song to me. It feels like it's come up multiple times already, and I think I've voted for it every time. But then Despair of ELFERIA starts up at 0:45 after the intro and doesn't let down at all after that. Beatmania songs in VGMC run a huge spectrum of different styles, but this one is a hit for sure.

MATCH 1

I like Scrap I/O a lot more than Imbrium from earlier in the contest! This song has a neat mysterious but also slightly sorrowful feeling to it. Some neat changeups in the song from slower parts to more intense breakbeat-esque portions. 2:43-4:16 is definitely my favorite part of the song. I like those brief piano portions that start at 2:48. It adds a little more to that mysterious feeling since it makes me feel like I'm hunting for clues in a mystery or I've discovered something important. Those strings in the part right after that are also really good. Really somber but pretty chord progressions. I don't know if prior brackets where this song showed up would've allowed me to make it retire, but here I was able to put it as a retiree, so I'm hoping it happens this year. I think it could potentially be in a good position to. ...Except upon checking votals, Desire Below (Flow) is barely winning, so any potential run might be stopped very early on :(

Not a big fan of Desire Below (Flow). I don't like those chromatic movements in the beginning of the song. 0:23-0:59's a little better, especially once the piano comes in, because there's some nice chord changes but there's something about that lead instrument I don't like there. 1:07-2:09 is cool rhythmically, but those 4 group of notes that show up repeatedly in the background draw too much attention away from the melody for me. Even 2:09-2:35, which I think has potential to be really appealing to me, falls short because it doesn't seem to hit the right notes for me. Ideally, that part would give me the reaction that the chord progressions mentioned in 0:23-0:59 give me to make for some cool organ-like progressions, but that doesn't happen here.

HYMN's a really cool song! I like the vocals a lot and there's some really great melodic stuff that goes on in this song. This is probably most of the song lol, but the parts I like the most are 0:00-0:29, 0:34-1:20, and 2:20 to the end (as well as some portions shortly before 2:20, to a slightly lesser extent).

Adventurous Inventors is also really cool! Kinda gives me similar vibes to Re-Awake from Steins;Gate 0. Also don't really have a lot to say about this song, it just sounds great all throughout. Quick edit, but what I like the most about this song is when the soft vocals, piano, and strings all come together towards the end of the song, so perhaps if the rest of the song was more like that, it would be able to make me vote for it here.

Really tough match, even now, but I'm still leaning HYMN on this one. I'm happy with either song winning here, though.
