How did CNN go from one of the most respected news networks in the world to... this?

When I was a kid CNN was considered the serious news outlet for grown ups.

Now it's a toothpick away from being Buzzfeed.

how exactly do women get paid less than men? When you apply for a job don't you get same payrate as anyone else applying for the same position?

Yeah, that's not what they said at all you goober. They're pointing out that far more women are involved in combating it (this is true), and that they make less money than their male counterparts while doing it (also true). But you looked at this data and thought to yourself "but how do I make this about myself?"

The average woman in a hospital is a nurse. The average man in a hospital is a doctor, what CNN is doing by ignoring that fact is not journalism its devious.

That's deceptive, they're grouping secretaries, nurses, techs, with doctors and admins. The gap isn't in pay, but positions.

This is a perfectly fair premise for an article. It says nothing to diminish the tragedy of men losing their lives. It simply acknowledges how Covid-19 aggravates economic divides already faced by women.

It literally says there's an 11% gap left when accounting for equal job titles????

They do mention that at the bottom of the graphic. They show how much of the gap is a result of different positions and how much a due to number of hours worked. It leaves about an 11% gap. Some would say this is partially due to salary negotiation, but I suspect a big factor they are overlooking is number of years of experience. That would need to be looked at.

I didn't see the graphic before, only the text. Yeah it does mention that, but I still feel the text is deceptive and clickbaity. That graph uses pretty small text at the bottom too (I had to actually go to Twitter to read it). Though that's just how media is now, it's all about sensationalism.

That 11% is averaged across many countries it seems too. Pay discrimination varies a lot by country.

How exactly does it vary by country? I'm curious. I tried looking up the data on the WHO site, but I'm getting an error. 'The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.' Lame.

I think CNN wants the following:

Men vs. Women
Masks vs. Unmasked
Black vs. White
Republican vs. Democrat
Church vs. State

But the same can be said about Fox News lol. I think it's just that age ol' phenomena: as chaos grows, ratings grow.

The novel coronavirus seems to be more deadly for men. But in many other ways, women are bearing the brunt of this pandemic.

It should have been changed to something like this:

The novel coronavirus appears to be more deadly for men. But women are still facing unique difficulties during this pandemic.

Its naive to think CNN is not trying to push a particular message, which is that women are the victims of oppression, regardless of the context. You can see it in the words they chose such as bear the brunt of, instead of something noble like leading the fight against or at least neutral like experiencing increased mortality. Aside from that, few media want to acknowledge that women choose to pursue certain medical or social service fields, despite the challenges such as long hours and lower pay. They deny womens agency in this.

Why not "Women are facing unique difficulties during this pandemic."

Regardless of the ingenuousness of this information, the primary goal of this article from the headline alone is to be divisive.

Anyone whose been in the workforce for years knows men do not "automatically" have a higher salary or a higher ranking position. Most (but not all) of my superiors have been women... from my most basic high school jobs, college jobs and out into corporate America.

The only people who can't figure it out are the ones who haven't worked a day in their lives and are trying to write about it.
