I rewatched this season until Wan comes in, and Ive liked it much better on a rewatch. Antagonist Varrick is way better than protag Varrick and this has to be the funniest season.

All of the team Avatar was still relevant, and Aangs family was an amazing sub-plot.

Unalaq is underrated since he doesnt give amazing quotes or has a menacing presence or team. But his manipulation of Korra and his fights are cool.

I actually like the balls to end the previous Avatars.

The civil war plot point was actually very interesting since it brings up a question never asked in ATLA. Aang always had the enemy and no higher authority to report to. How does a growing Avatar handle CIVIL unrest and especially who do you seek guidance from if your blood family is still alive.

Like, this shit had a war profiteer! The amount of complexity and nuance this season had is insane for a kids show.

They completely dropped the ball on endings this season though. Varricks defeat was anti-climatic. Bolin should have legit used his acting he built the whole season to outfox the twins, and Unalaq should have just been a dude that got it wrong about Vaatu and been tricked. The giant energy battles made no sense. It just should have been Unalaq in a dark avatar state as the final battle. That way to seal Vaatu, Unalaq would have to take the fall too since no one knows how to separate them.

The spirit/rava stuff rubs a lot of people the wrong way

In a show that has pretty consistent rules with its "magic" it's a bit weird having actual like hocus pocus dues ex machina shit

for like 5 years my desktop background was a picture of aang with all the avatars behind him.

and in one episode the creators (minus their key storywriter), said "lmao what if we ruin literally everything that makes the avatar great"

so fuck this show.

The negative reaction to it is really overblown

I think the concept of the "Dark Avatar" was kinda dumb but all the stuff with Avatar Wan and Raava was fine

I was annoyed at the amnesia part, but I liked other things in the season, especially the part about Avatar Wan.

You didnt elaborate on how it ruined it, nor what was the thing that was ruined. So Im forced to draw my own conclusions.

I haven't seen the show but I heard from a podcast that they were told every season that it was the last one, so plot pacing is all over the place for that show.

Pretty much. Aang pulls a giant warship-smashing fish monster out of his ass when all hope is lost = Awesome! Korra pulls big glowy Korrazilla out of her ass to fight Unalaqzilla = 0/10 shit writing.

I don't like either instance, btw. Both shows are at their low points when they fall back on spirit-y deus ex machina to get the heroes out of tight spots.

Tbh, I always that was a copout excuse. That just prevented them from making multiple season arcs in advance. But particularly hurt Asami Id say.

If they removed the love triangle crap, they could easily round out the good parts of the seasons.

The first Book got a lot of criticism for a bit of filler and what some people felt like was an ass pull for an ending. Korra spends all this time trying to learn airbending by controlling her emotions and ends up learning to airbend by punching at the air in desperation. I didn't mind, but other people did.

So Book 2 rolls around and the audience was hoping for something more nuanced than before. It has a promising opening until her uncle goes full evil mode and you quickly realize you're getting a pretty generic villain, especially when compared to the villains of season 1. A misguided ascetic would have been better. Then there's the animation quality dip in the first half when they outsourced to a different studio to rush the season out, and another massive ass pull at the end of the season.

It's still entertaining as a whole, it's just the weakest part.
