"Next Monday" is unambiguously two days from now. The phrase can mean "the next Monday that occurs" or "Monday of next week," but in this case, they're the same thing.

It'd be ambiguous if, say, it's Tuesday, and you say "next Friday" (because "the next Friday that occurs" and "Friday of next week" are different dates).

I mean, based on responses, apparently not

but I really don't understand how "next Monday" could mean anything other than the two possibilities I laid out. nine days from now is not the next Monday and it's not Monday of next week, there's nothing "next" about it

I've had this assumption screw me up a couple of times. If it's getting to the end of the week I'm far more likely to say either "this Monday" or "the Monday after next"

Sure there is. If you have two of something in a sequence then the second is "next" after the first.

So you have this Monday coming up and then the next Monday after that. It's next Monday.

I dunno, if I heard "this Monday" with no context at all I'd think 5 days ago (because that's the Monday of this week)

if I heard "this Monday" in a context that implied it was in the future I'd understand it meant two days from now but also think "oh, you mean next Monday"

Exactly what Drak said. It depends on what week it is. Like, if it's Sunday and someone says "next Saturday" I'd think "the Saturday of next week." Likewise, if it's Saturday and someone says "next Monday" I'd think "the Monday of next week."

You are first in that scenario, your neighbor being second. Hence "next" door neighbor.

If it's nine days from now, you're supposed to say "the party is next Monday."

I'd be very confused (and miss the party) if someone used it any other way.

Last Monday is the Monday that just past.

Regardless I ask for clarification when talking to someone because I'm not a mind reader and don't know if any specific person I am talking to is an idiot or not.

I always assumed it meant next (week) Monday, but the week was dropped for simplicity. Thus, if said from Tuesday through Saturday, I would assume the Monday of the following week (2 days from Saturday)

If said on Sunday, I would assume 8 days from now because the following day would still be this week (and why wouldn't you just say tomorrow)
