Action in the 80s tends to trend to mindless entertainment, and at the top of that mindless mound of 80s action sits Escape from New York, a king among its kind. This largely rides off of a simple but interesting concept and a tongue-in-cheek performance from Kurt Russell which tells us he's in on the jokes and at the same time fully embracing the nature of the character. Hoffman makes a very curious villain that some people apparently think is Captain Hook, but given the performance, I can't imagine Hoffman thought he was playing the character from Peter Pan. And Julia Roberts is there too. I'm not sure why, but she is.
