Escape From New York
Rating: 72/100

This is not a good movie. Let me be entirely clear about that. But this is, in fact, a fun movie. Action in the 80s tends to trend to mindless entertainment, and at the top of that mindless mound of 80s action sits Escape from New York, a king among its kind. This largely rides off of a simple but interesting concept and a tongue-in-cheek performance from Kurt Russell which tells us he's in on the jokes and at the same time fully embracing the nature of the character. That's a tough needle to thread, but he does it.

Airplane!
Rating: 74/100

The further removed I get from Airplane, the more I feel as if it hasn't aged well. It's starting to feel like a relic, archaic. A historical example of how the word "funny" used to be defined, rather than actually funny. The broad style of the Leslie Nielsen parody comedy asks us to throw every type of joke at the wall and see what sticks, and, ultimately, it's a good strategy when you have a talented cast piloting a script that is unyielding in its one-liners.

Superman II
Rating: 78/100

My favorite of the original Superman films, I've admittedly lost a little of my love for this movie over the years. I think, to some extent, Geoff Johns has done a better job making Zod and his cronies engaging characters in the mid-00s, and Lex Luthor, while hilarious in this film, comes across as largely toothless. But it's an enchanting little story, reminiscent of a fairy tale more than a superhero story.

Ghostbusters
Rating: 81/100

Hilarious without being funny. Does that make sense? There aren't really 'jokes' in Ghostbusters, and yet, as a comedy, it's one of the better ones of the 80s. The style of the film walks the line of multiple genres, and the result is a charming, self-aware story that never lingers too long on the process. It's just along for the ride, relying on an all-star cast to propel the insanity forward.

God, I love this movie. It's action sequences are inventive, brilliant, rhythmic in nature. They are one part comedy and two parts technically impressive. Honestly, everything about the world of Kung Fu Hustle just yearns to be explored further and further. There's a magic in every aspect of the story, and I felt spellbound just watching it.

Rating: 53/100

An interesting concept that honestly breaks down really quickly if you give it any thought, Speed is a mess of 90s action - loud, poorly edited, full of cliched dialogue, and anchored by a goofy, ridiculous villain who needs to exist because of reasons. Likely, Keanu Reeves is always Keanu Reeves, and that makes this an average movie.

Beautiful, horrifying. I don't have any particularly interesting insights about Coraline other than the strange way it manipulates my emotions being sort-of a very Neil Gaiman thing to do. Gaiman has always married his brand of fairy tale to a flavor of storytelling wholly his own. When you look at his best works, they all feel like Gaiman stories. There's a certain timelessness to them, like the stories would hold up five years from now or five hundred.

One of my all-time favorite films. I expect most people either think it's intensely boring or just flat-out intense. The crafting of the plot is perfection; there's a visual progression through the film that you can anticipate coming, and yet you desperately want to know how the jurors will be swayed. Especially the final few. It's suspense in a really, really unique way.

Soderbergh is one of my favorite directors, and Matt Damon is always a must-watch for me. That said, The Informant! just kind of... exists? I was left kind of cold by the film. I have to blame the writing, first and foremost. The subject matter is, I believe, tough to make exciting, but the script does itself no favors.

I respect anyone who hates the bloated length of this movie, but as a biopic, it's one of the best ones out there. I think, for me, you can't give a long period of someone's life short shrift. In all honesty, I'm more of a fan of exploring biographies in a self-contained American Crime Story/Feud style season of a show. Lawrence of Arabia is probably about as long as one of those, right? Whether it is or not, it does a great job at feeling like a fully told story of a really interesting person, one I have conflicting feelings about.

Another excellent concept that was weighed down by some questionable decisions. Hoffman makes a very curious villain that some people apparently think is Captain Hook, but given the performance, I can't imagine Hoffman thought he was playing the character from Peter Pan. And Julia Roberts is there too. I'm not sure why, but she is. As for the star of the show, however, Robin Williams is every bit the charismatic lead that the movie needs, and I wish more time could have been spent in the process of watching him reclaim his childlike sense of wonderment.

Yet somehow, this biting satire really captures some interesting nuance in its discussions about how Hollywood characters to the bizarre eccentricities of the acting elite. RDJ in particular really strikes some chords with the Kirk Lazarus character, a character who I think can be endlessly dissected. And once again, Matty Mac knocks it out of the park as Tugg Speedman's agent.

In all honesty, I find myself all over the place with Monty Python comedies. Generally speaking, I prefer the tight variety hour style of their shorter sketches most of all, but there are a couple of exceptions. Life of Brian at times feels like it could be a much more biting subversion of the Christ story, but it becomes equal parts incoherent and obvious, and it kind of loses its momentum. The end is fantastic though.

I actually like how the superheroes start off really well received in the eyes of the community, then due to their negligence become really unpopular and are forced into hiding, then by the end they're back in the limelight. A collision of millennial spatial reasoning and social logic that refracts through the kaleidoscope technicolor comic book world of superheroics, creating a sharply-written, intimate exploration into twentysomething relationships, turning their iniquities palatable with comedic fantasy. In other words, it's a damn good ride. Almost every single side character feels like a burst of personality, and the cast is a murderer's row of comedic talent, turning the smallest of one-liners into brilliant moments. Really, the antidote to the common Hangover.
