Most of the spikes have been in rural areas. You know - the places where people were dead-set against mask wearing and keeping public gatherings shut down, because not being able to get a haircut is tyranny?

Not saying that the protests aren't going to create spikes of their own, but that's not what we're seeing now (and given the incubation period of the virus, I'd expect we'll start seeing numbers going up in protest areas starting next week).

Well, some of the people crying over the Floyd protests spreading COVID-19 were totally fine with or even participating in protests just a few weeks ago against literally nothing more than government trying to enforce social distancing.

While they're now shedding alligator tears over these protestors not practicing social distancing.

Ever since the outrage over the protest at De Dam, Dutch protesters have been keeping the 1.5m distance ordained. It is not that difficult.

tear gas and rubber bullets just send people to the already overcrowded emergency rooms and result in multimillion dollar settlements from the cities that taxpayers have to pay

so if that is seriously your argument then youve gotta concede that the government under trump seriously sucks at their job, especially considering the cases of police brutality did nothing but make even more people want to protest

I was talking about the conservative protests weeks ago when Trump was telling them to "liberate" their states, and they weren't even wearing masks.

shut the fuck up, it's not like people like us are completely devoid of this knowledge. we've only had it shoved into our eyes and ears for the past few month. no no no, what the fuck do we know?

i would figure an enormous group of people intimately close to each other all shouting and breathing all over each other would surely spread the disease more... oh oops, but i'm not a scientist, so i'm obviously wrong. i figure my common sense about how this disease spreads (since the news tells us daily) makes sense, oh but i don't have any degrees in science, so i'm automatically wrong, obviously! stupid me, ok?

WaPo and NYTimes have been highlighting the risk that protests pose for spreading cases

NYTimes had an entire article dedicated to it like the day after protests were popping up across the US and basically restated that point every day since

But go ahead and imagine your alternate reality I guess

Their hand is going to be forced but only because it will be so obvious where the spike came from they won't be able to pretend it came from something else. But I don't know... the media always manages to surprise me with new mental gymnastics. If they do blame the protesters, it will be painted in a positive light with them claiming the protests were more necessary than preventing the spreading of a pandemic. And exponential growth requires a few iterations to be really noticeable, especially above a highly variable background that's already seeing spikes from other sources. It's not like you're going to see all of the protest-related Covid cases showing up within 14 days of the first one.

Once again using facts and not feelings, the average is 5 days. We are 3x away from that now. The protestors have had a chance to go home and spread it to everyone in their family and then some. The exponential growth would be seen by now. It hasnt. Youre wrong. Stfu.

So, on average, three iterations (since apparently a-/presymptomatic spread isn't a thing now). Presuming it started from a fairly small source population (especially where the demographics involved in these protests have tended to overlap quite a bit with the demographics that have generally respected stay-at-home orders, so I'd expect a lower incidence than the regional average), that's still really not all that much in an additive sense, regardless of how large a base you're working with. It's not at all hard to believe that any growth that has taken place thus far has been obscured by spikes from Memorial Day.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

So why the hell do people keep talking about spikes again?

The tracking on that site shows still the virus is just doing what it always has done...regardless of the initial stay at home nonsense...the lessening of restrictions...the riots etc etc

Its...just doing what it was going to do.

I mean sure you could probably cherry pick a town or an area where theres a small spike and there was a riot as well...but you're still not cherry picking areas where there were riots and nothing happened.

Look overall...see nothing changing...and learn to accept all efforts were pretty much pointless and we as humans overestimate our importance in all this.
