I'm here to recommend an anime to the board.

I highly recommend this series to any fans of anime.

It's based on a webtoon and is produced by crunchyroll... so it's kind of fake anime. But it's first season is just about wrapped up.

The premise is that there's a tower.... and you can climb it. If you can clear every floor and get to the top, you can have your dreams granted. The main character, Bam, has a girl that's really important to him that leaves to go climb the tower - so he follows her in.

The first season takes place on the first two floors which are based around testing people who enter to see if they are even worthy of climbing the higher floors. I'm honestly not that big of a fan of the webtoon as a whole, but this arc is very good and the anime did a great job animating it.

So go watch it.

Thank you for your time.

I've watched the first few episodes and am really enjoying it as well.

I'm far from an anime expert but I second this recommendation wholeheartedly.

I've been watching the show every week as it's been released.

It's been excellent so far, especially with SPOILERS UP TO EPISODE 12

"Tower of Betrayal". First Khun's plan to intentionally lose to keep the team together, then Endorsi's plan to do the same thing. And now of course.....FUCK RACHEL. Based on the music I knew that it was building up to something horrible, but I absolutely did not expect THAT to happen. Excited to see where episode 13 goes and then I might pick up the webtoon/manhwa afterwards.

The past few years I've had some pals who have talked about new webtoon chapters. I tended to zone what they said out, or temporarily deafened myself so as not to be spoiled, as it did seem like something I'd be interested in checking out.

The style webtoons are presented in is a bit off-putting to me though. Same issue I have with a fair number of manga. I much rather prefer animation on a screen.

That said, I also know this thing has a considerable amount of material to work with, so will have to wait approximately one One Piece series to get the full meal deal. Apparently this anime is currently an appetizer at best.

My plan has been to wait for this season to finish before consuming it.

I've been reading the Webtoon and it's been consistently enjoyable although admittedly not amazing. My favorite parts are actually mostly in part 2 of the webtoon, but the first arc is also good. Also some parts of part 2 have dragged a lot which isn't really a problem that the first part had.

I know the music for the anime is done by Kevin Penkin, which makes me pretty confident the show is worth watching even if only for that.

The 12th episode just came out, and only 1 to go before it finishes the season with 13 episodes.

I think watching it right now up to the end of the current episode and letting it digest before the 13th episode comes out is the perfect time to watch it tbh. It's kinda why I made this topic today and not in the last couple months while it's been airing or after the final episode comes out!

it's so strange to me that someone like this would be composing anime music.... Does that include the opening / ending?

I think just the OST--not the opening or ending.

I don't know how he got into the industry to begin with but I'd say by now he's probably an established figure? (Not 100% sure) He already made a pretty big name for himself with the Made in Abyss soundtrack, and he's also worked on Shield Hero and this since then.

been following the webtoon since around 2013. haven't watched the anime. had a m8 who complained pretty drasticallly about a load of changes they made tho (the explanations were shit, they removed a lot of the lore/world building, endorsi/rachel's character was apparently very different). nice to see something i've followed and hyped for so long start to get mainstream appeal.
only thing i really still keep up with in the anime/manga world, stopped caring about everything else.
absolutely adore it. some arcs are pretty meh (fuck revolution road), the cast has got very bloated, and it's a very slowburn in terms of plot progression/character development which can be frustrating.

also hwa-ryun > yuri > endorsi > ehwa in the best girl rankings. ha yura is also pretty great but loses points considering her team.

Every single change and adjustment in the anime is a massive improvement and absolutely for the better. Heavily shows how it's the work of professionals and not the amateur the writer was at the beginning, kind of shocking how on point the Anime's direction is.

I could understand how a big fan might be upset that it's not "pure", but nothing is actually altered in terms of plot and there are no decisions I can point to and say they didn't make the right call.

I haven't reread the first arc since the first time I went through it, so there's some small details that changed that I didn't even notice that my brother pointed out, and there were only a couple details I did notice. All of the important beats I was looking forward to happened pretty much as I expected from memory.

So I don't think adaptation is really an issue unless you are absolutely #nochanges

The first part (pretty sure what the anime covers in full) was what got very popular among the manga community way back when in 2012/13.
The first few arcs of 2nd part is different in terms of pacing, artstyle, characters, focus so took a lot of immediate heat for not being part 1 2.0.
And there was a period where the author needed timeoff due to surgery which effected the ending to one arc (workshop) and the start of another (revolution road) with the pacing being pretty awful across that time and is generally considered the lowest points of the comic.

Since around the namehunt station arc (midway through part 2), most of the fanbase has gone back to being very positive of the comic.

The entire beginning of the Hell Train arc was definitely my least favorite part so far. Name Hunt Station and (spoilers for part 2 of the webcomic about 2/3 to 3/4 through) Floor of Death were both great arcs however, imo. I've just started the Hidden Floor arc though and am not really that into it, at least at present.

Although the first part of Hell Train does have one of my absolute favorite moments of the entire comic. (Avoiding specifics, I'll just say it's in episodes 184 and 185 of part 2.)

I also really liked the Workshop Battle, though yes I didn't really care for its finale much.

That's the only time, at least for how far I've gotten.

The entire first season of the anime is essentially a prologue.

not that similar. the first arc is about the various characters who happened to be lobbed into the same group for testing as the main character so it's pretty much character driven on their interactions, competition, and scheming against eachother.

Later arcs (spoilering this out incase people don't want to hear anything about life beyond the current anime) are about the politics and conflicts of the various kind of people who live in the tower, and what life is like for people climbing the tower. The Tower is more like a world that people live in, rather than a video game environment to just continuously progress through.

Oh yeah I wanted to comment on this - I think that is an interesting difference in the anime. I've read a ton of webtoons, and some are terrible and some a pretty good, and overall it's cool people can pretty much publish their own work how they want... but even in the good ones, the lack of an editor to reign in a creator on bad ideas or to tighten things up is very felt.

Got caught up on the last two and there's so many small minute changes for the better. Even Parasol gets a boost.

And God the soundtrack just SLAMS. I even feel some House in Fata Morgana blood in there. Anyone loving the soundtrack should go straight to Made in Abyss, too. Kevin Penkin is the GOAT. Have Australians make all anime OSTs from now on.

Episode 13 Spoilers

Well that's quite the transition. It's actually SO interesting to think about Rachel traveling with the entire gang as they try to carry out Bam's legacy. Can she keep up the facade? Khun already seems like he's suspicious of her. Meanwhile Bam being concealed from the Princesses of Jahad and his friends, going to train up his Shinsu to travel (alone?) up the tower. At some point in the very far future he'll eventually meet his friends (and Rachel) again and what a reunion that could be!! Maybe it's time to read the webtoon.
