*I know the answer that will probably come to mind will be something like a game you bought that was terrible and you'd consider a "waste of money", but I mean literally. Like, you spent or gave away money, and received NOTHING in return for it. Not even something undesirable, you just completely threw it away.

For example, a dental office opened near my job and for the grand opening they sent a representative over to try and get people to purchase a teeth cleaning session for $40. I didn't really want to do it, but the person kept on badgering me about it and I gave in. I assumed it was a good deal, and I wouldn't miss the money if I was disappointed in it. Later, when they called to set up the appointment I realized it sounded fairly unpleasant, and I was sure they were going to try and upcharge me and get me to schedule future work, and that I'd probably agree to whatever they tried to sell me again. So I just never went. I basically just threw $40 away. I kind of feel bad about that.

I somewhat often buy groceries that expire before I can eat them so they get thrown away

For something bigger, around Christmas 2018 I bought a plane ticket back home for ~$1000 and forgot my passport when I went to the airport, so I couldn't go. Couldn't get a refund either, so yeah, just threw that money away essentially.

Like two years ago, I spent $700 on a replacement motherboard for my laptop that was busted. It didn't fix the problem, so I ended up tossing the laptop anyway.

I guess when I missed a flight last year

Edit: no actually. In February an ATM swallowed my card and I had to pay to get a new one. I guess you can say I got the new card in return for the money, but nothing was actually gained overall, so it felt like a waste.

When I had a tire puncture and had to get it replaced in maybe March? It was like $220. I have insurance that fully covers any tire replacement due to damage but the insurance is a pain in the ass to deal with so I just paid for it and didn't bother trying to get reimbursed.

My car payments are due the 28th of each month and I blanked and didn't realize it today's a Sunday.

So I'll be charged some late fee for that

It actually was hard for me to think of something. Theres the common thing of doing something stupid and getting fined or a ticket or late fees or something

If my budget allows it, I'll buy something new at the grocery store just to try it along with my usual things. Obviously it can be hit or miss but I still eat it, even if its horrible I can't stand to waste food because of my upbringing. So technically its not a waste

the only thing I can think of is if I made an investment in an item to ebay and then the value plummets and I end up losing money selling it

it happens more than you think, trending values are super fickle

This one is embarrassing but it is what it is. It happened.

There was a period of about 2 months when I first moved into my current apartment where I unwittingly had the Fan switch on the thermostat set to ON as opposed to AUTO. So even when the temperature was correct, it was just always on blowing air. I know how the thing works, and it didn't start out set to ON, I think there was just a morning when I was groggy or whatever and accidentally flipped that switch instead of the Cool/Off/Heat switch, and didn't notice I had done it. And I was so desensitized the sound of A/C running all the time, and my bill is on autopay and I happened to not check the amount on it for the first month after it happened. I saw it the second month and was like uggggghhhh fuck me.

I just saw this topic again and, despite having literally posted in it, misread it as "when's the last time you saw a straight-up wasted monkey?"

I probably need to sleep?

Also last Christmas my aunt decided I needed a year-long subscription to Disney+, I knew that was a waste immediately but it's a Christmas gift so it's hard for me to be like "refund this I don't want it!". Naturally, I watched Mandalorian in about a week and haven't touched it since.

A few years ago there was a knock at my door, I answered it and it was a girl who was selling subscriptions for our local newspaper. It was like 20 bucks, I thought she was pretty cute, I said fuck it and signed up. The newspaper was on our driveway every morning and I didn't ready any of them. Didn't renew after the subscription expired. Don't feel as bad about losing the 20 as I do about wasting all that damn paper.

A part for our heat pump last winter. Just needed to replace one part. The part was designed wrong for our specific heat pump, and we couldn't get our money back. Turns out nobody had the part, had to replace the whole thing.

In the past, I've booked trips/vacations weeks or months ahead of time and when it came time to leave I just didn't feel like going anymore. Too late to get my flights/hotels refunded. Probably has added up to a few thousand dollars. Nowadays I never plan my trips until like a week or less before departure.

Do you know how many times i've had a netflix sub and forgot to cancel it only to remember like 2 months later?

I spent $80 on some portable wifi box a few months ago, because the place I'm staying at has issues with the power going out and I'm currently doing online teaching, only to immediately realize that the connection is garbage and essentially unusable, so I put it in a drawer, never to be used again and instead bought a Uninterruptible Power Supply for my router.

Good thing I didn't sign a contract on it otherwise I'd be paying $30 a month for the internet!

5 months or so ago I spent $35.99 on a "free" evite subscription service for the traditional wedding I was going to have in mid April. You can imagine how that went... There was a bunch of other wedding expenses, but thankfully most of that I was able to return or was refunded automatically due to the "unprecedented circumstances".

Omg I just remembered my worst one. I got suckered into buying these supplements online and they autocharged me for like 3 months and I somehow didn't notice. It was like over $200 total. That sucked, I never even took them either lol.

I both totally relate to this (I feel it often) and also completely not at all (I would never let myself waste something like that)
