I'm realizing I didn't give the full context.

It started with my friend sharing a picture that was like "imagine being a jew and seeing a statue of hitler..." and goes on and makes the point that's what black people in America feel like.

This person responded to that post being like "Oh yeah well if that's what it's all about why did they tear down the EMANCIPATION STATUE, HUH?" *links to picture of the statue*

It was pointed out to him "well, first of all, why are you cherrypicking this one specific example out of dozens/hundreds that doesn't happen to be a confederate soldier, and using that as a reason to handwave the entire BLM movement?"

"Because history is being ERASED!"

and then that's when the point I made earlier happened

To issue a fair warning, an overwhelming majority of academics in the fields of history, archaeology, museum studies, and heritage studies all agree that there is no real reason to preserve most statues of Confederate soldiers and officers. So I do admit upfront that it's going to be nigh impossible to shift my opinion on this, but I do welcome the opposing viewpoint.

"ERASING HISTORY!?" is such a joke argument.

Pretty sure Germany hasn't forgotten what happened there in the 1930s without needing to erect and preserve a bunch of statues to "remind" themselves.

If anything, "erasing history" is what many Southern textbooks/apologists do in trying to whitewash the history of the Confederacy with calling the Civil War the "War of Northern Aggression" and trying to claim it wasn't about slavery at all, just states' rights! Ignoring the cornerstone speech or even the simple follow-up "states' right to do what?"

If anything, what's being "erased" is the false revisionist history that Confederate sympathizers and apologists built for themselves and continue to teach to this day to perpetuate it.

No, I'm not particularly worried, particularly given that afaik all of the filing deadlines have passed.

It's still a selfish move worthy of scorn given how necessary it is to get this colossal fuckup who's currently actively impeding our pandemic repsonse out of the White House, though!

That's not strictly true.

While the filing deadline for the major party primaries have surely came and went by now, independent candidates could still get on the ballot in most states still.

Indiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Texas are the only ones where the deadline for ballot access for an independent candidate has passed.

Most deadlines are somewhere in August. Keep in mind though, he'd have to gather enough signatures by the deadlines in each of state. In some (Wisconsin, 2,000; Tennessee, 275) the number isn't that high. In others... (Florida, over 132k by the 15th; California, 197k, Michigan 30k with some conditions) that's a steeper hill. Still, in a few others you can just buy your way on (Louisiana, Oklahoma)

There's also write-ins but those also require some paperwork in most states AFAIK and a few just don't allow it period.

LOL if reparations happened that wouldnt change much about the social structure. Its not gonna change the prison sentencing disparity, its not gonna change the corporate hierarchy, and its not gonna change the biases of the people in charge.

Most people don't mind being hypocritical because all they want is to get their goal. The goal of Republican politicians is to keep the capital machine running like normal, so lies about the response are never going to be seen as wrong. They will be seen as at worst, missteps that failed to pretend to care enough or that failed by pretending to care at all. The rich want us to go back to making them money and serving them, the poor right wants us to stop asking them to care about their fellow man and to let them go back to consuming as before. That's it.

Well, yeah, her response to the question posed exposes her for being a partisan hack.

You're from the UK, right? There's an added layer where I think "you had to be here" because back then Republicans fearmongered about it in a way where they nearly treated it as if it were what COVID is now all the way back in 2014.

like if they treated COVID with even half of the "concern" they did with Ebola back then we might have had a chance to contain things.

Seriously though, this is at least 10x more tragic than the death of George Floyd. It's more tragic in every possible way one might think of. And yet, nobody cares. At all. There will be no protests. No public funerals. No messages from corporations. Nothing. Just an innocent girl killed for no reason whatsoever.
