3 kingdoms is a mud that has been up and being played for over 3 decades now. It has quite a few players with well over 10 YEARS of actual play time, and it's not going anywhere soon.

The year before I met my wife (1996), I played the game on average 14 1/2 hours a day for a year straight, becoming the first ever God Emperor of Dune in the Fremen guild. I stopped cold turkey because I was wasting my life, but, I could have kept playing no problem and still been improving every hour or so for years to come. I doubt the game is gonna go anywhere in the next 10 years either and maybe past that.

It has more content than DDO (dungeons and dragons online) but that is easy cause it's text based. Still if you wanted something you could play nonstop forever (like your whole life) that would probably be the best game.

I think I went over 1k hours on my first playthrough
I don't understand how thats possible. How did you not beat literally everything in half that time? The game isn't THAT big.

I've 100%ed plenty of open world games and I don't think I've even approached 1k hours on any single playthrough. Probably not even 500 hours in one playthrough. I don't even feel like I go particularly fast.

Isn't it kinda hard to set up a private server?

Sure, but we're talking about somebody whose primary hobby depends on that. The choice is either to give up gaming entirely or set up a private server, so the stakes are potentially high enough to motivate them.

And don't they tend to get shut down?

Depends a lot on how much it's competing with current products. Sega, for example, didn't do much of anything to any of the PSO Blue Burst private servers that arose after they shut down the official ones, since it wasn't a game they were selling anymore (the Blue Burst release was available only via a subscription model, and stopped being sold when the servers were shut down), nor did they have any other games in their repertoire whose userbase would be appreciably affected by people playing the game on a private server. To my knowledge, most/all of those private servers died out naturally before PSO2 was released, which might have qualified for that, but even then PSO2 only just saw an official NA release a couple months ago and is such a radically different game that I would barely call them competitors (beyond the most absolutely basic interpretation of competing for users' free time, which literally every leisure activity ever does and trying to control a specific one is foolish).

Private Vanilla servers for WoW, though? Those were coming out at a point when Blizzard wanted to sell more expansions (and, later, sell Vanilla WoW itself again) so they were absolutely competing with one of their current products. Shutting those down was completely within expectations. Even once WoW actually dies, I'm sure Blizzard will try to release a remake somewhere down the road, so I would expect them to continue squashing any new servers that pop up because they do threaten their revenue.

one thing, though, is how close does the game have to be to be considered the same game for the purposes of this question? like, ffxiv has a hell of a lot more that's server-sided than PSO:BB did due to their nature. unless there was a source code leak, there would have to be a LOT of restructuring done if a private server would ever be made, and massive chunks of the game would be entirely unavailable

I know a guy that's slowly coding a Ragnarok Online clone completely without consulting the source code. Is that considered the same game as base RO when the engine is just meant to emulate what RO played like? it is actually really convincing, but its guts are totally different

I think it's very possible that a ffxiv private server would not be a very realistic prospect after the game is gone

I love MMOs like Eve-online for their size and freedom, but it's more like an addiction than joy which I feel games should be a joy , nobody ( or at least I ) wants to deal with second real life when they try to relax and on top of it those games suck cause they make you to buy monthly subscription to even get a decent play and that feels like another fee on the list of your monthly expenses...annoying.

Even tho they are much more open and the story is endless it's just not worth it.
I prefer game consoles all the way.

Can't decide between Shadow of Mordor and Skyrim .
Those are perfect games.

On the other hand I love pokemon and monster hunter, but the games are a bit limited which probably wouldn't push them over skyrim or Shadow of mordor for me.
