Scott is a selfish asshole One of the major themes of the story is that Scott doesn't really like her as a person as much as he views her as a conquest. She's something to be won, not a person whose own opinions matter. It isn't until the very end of the story that he actually undergoes character development and comes to understand that he's been an asshole and decides to try and be a better person. His treatment of Knives over time reflects his growth as a person, and in theory, the Scott who is with Ramona in the end has a far better chance of actually keeping her than the Scott in the beginning of the story ever did. Again, that's the comic, though. I had no interest in watching the movie, so I have no idea how they might have left things out or changed things there.
