What do you think a passing grade should be?

People might think schools that have lower standards by having passing grades lower than what america is, that they must have a bad education system but that's not true at all as recent studies have shown that even though Canada has an easier path to passing a grade, it's education system ranks as high as the united states..

America also has a higher drop out rate than Canada as well.

So what do you think a passing grade should be? 50 or 60?

It should be 60. If you can't get MORE than half the answers right, you shouldn't be allowed to pass.

I am soooo glad that my degree was earned in a field where diversity trash aren't given free pass. If you make mistakes that are dangerous to people's lives, no amount of virtue signaling and crying will bail you out.

Canada doesn't have an education system. Education is almost exclusively the jurisdiction of the provinces. Education quality varies between provinces considerably, with Alberta ranking the highest not only in Canada, but in the entire western hemisphere.

75 or higher, and that is being lenient.

I considered anything under 95 a failure when I went to school.

It's relative. 60 in the majority of the US might be as good as 35 or 40 in most of Canada when you consider how the US has been handling everything in the last twenty years.

I'm pretty sure you had to have a C to pass back in my day (we used dino's to get to school). I graduated with a 4.0 and a full scholarship (Which I didn't use), but I don't think you passed with a D back then.

Not sure when that changed. I have a cousin who graduated not that many years ago though and now you can have over a 4.0 lol (extra credit etc). I think the whole system got overhauled awhile ago.

Physics students just twiddling our thumbs here...especially in grad school getting a 60% would be considered doing very well depending on course.

If that is the case then neither does America, the standards are typically state wide (and even then, it is only the standardized tests, the actual curriculum is largely decided on the local level). About the only thing that is a national test is the SAT/ACT, and that is largely run by the colleges.

I think a 64 was the pass fail line for us? But we were one of highest rated public school systems in the country.

Neither.

51 or above. It's technically above half, you got more right than wrong technically. So you should technically pass.

It's not like schools in the US tend to teach beyond testing for funding most of the time. They also apparently we're made with factory work in mind, which while it exists still isn't nearly as prevalent as it was back then.

It's technically both a super outdated system and overall set up to get the schools funding more than actual learning.

Which is how I passed basically on tests alone. Homework doesn't even mean shit when you tend to get 100% (or above with extra credit questions) on most tests. Kinda sad actually. Hey you give me boring work to take home and tell me it's to prepare for tests, I'm not going to do it.

I'm pretty close to this. In high school I think a 60 is 'passing'. At most universities you can get less than a 70, but it won't count to many classes. Most pre-requisites state something like:

MATH 171 with a minimum grade of "C"

So a "D" (59-69) does you no good even though you didn't fail the class.

Personally, I always strive for about a 90 or better - that usually means I actually know something about the subject. 80-89 usually means I somewhat know it and anything less than 80 means I'm just guessing for the most part.

Unless you're planning on doing a career that involves math in some way then almost all math is useless to learn after the basics.

There are many careers that involve math and in addition math promotes logical thinking which is useful in any field.

You don't need algebra at all except for something mathematical or scientific.

It is 55 here and teachers design tests based on that. So as long as people understand what a passing grade entails, then it is okay.

Curving based on how the group performed as a whole is an alternative, perhaps easier on the teacher, but flawed in my opinion.

From a literal approach, yes. Mathematics education remains one of the best ways to gain logical and analytical thinking skills.

You're learning to solve problems that you didn't even know existed, using a system of rules and theorems that you just learned. That's pretty far from useless.
